2018-06-27 - Commission for Residents with Disabilities - Minutes Cm,mission im Residents with Disabilities Minutes from Meeting of Village of Buffalo Grove Commission for Residents with Disabilities Wednesday June 27, 2018 @ 7:00 PM I. Call to order at 7:05pm • Commissioners Present: Rick Kahen, Jack Shapiro, Judy Samuels, Marty Sussman, Lexi Robinson, Deb Verson, Leo Njongmeta, Mark Weiner, Donna Garfield, Beth Shapiro, Dean Klassman • Commissioners Absent: Geri Miller Brown, Larry Sweica, David Morton • Also absent Trustee Liaisons Les Ottenheimer and Dave Weidenfeld • Staff Liaison Present: Brian Sheehan II. Approval of minutes from May 23, 2018: • Motion: Donna Garfield • Second: Judy Samuels III. Old Business • Guests: Debbie Gross (LCSW further discussion re: State of Illinois ID cards) • Senator Morrison has a conflict and is unable to attend IV. State ID Cards • Debbie Gross and Marty Sussman met with Senator Morrison - who seems to be on board • Senator Morrison has since contacted Secretary of State who has approved the okay to include this information as part of State ID Cards (this will be the first in Illinois) • September 7, 2018 - (event following Buffalo Grove Days at Village Hall so we can market it during Fun & Food) I. Secretary of State will come to the Counsel Chambers to sign people up and issue cards for families • Debbie and Marty put together a flier with additional information • Card is optional - a disability code could be a potential way for families who are uncomfortable putting a medical diagnosis on the card I. Card purpose is to help First Responders know right away what to do in an emergency situation • Need to clarify: I. Can you get a driver's license, a state ID, and a disability ID? • Need to determine: I. If we say Communication Assist on the State ID is that enough? Do we need more specific information for First Responders without having to call or look into multiple databases to find the information o Need to discuss with First Responders to determine what would be most beneficial to them (what will the implications be for training? - Marty has been in contact with the Buffalo Grove Chief of Police) o Who from the Secretary of State will actually do the writing of the information on the cards? o This can be for any disability and a y age - but the focus of this new initiative is for those who need communication support and assistance II. Marketing/Publicity ideas o How will we help inform other villages and townships of that this program o The Village will help draft a o Draft a blurb about the event for the Village to post on Social Media (Facebook and Twitter) III. Logistics for September 7 event o What information do individuals need to bring with them? (Doctors notes proving the disability? HIPPA waiver? o Is there a way to register online? o What exactly will individuals get that day? • Idea for Fun & Food: I. Have a table with fliers that give information about the ID cards at Fun & Food and collect people's information to remind them of the event on September 7, 2018 (Secretary of State is not available to come out and issue cards during Memorial Day Weekend) V. Buffalo Grove Days • Guest: Matt Settler from BG DAYS committee i. Matt Settler has a conflict and is unable to attend • Discussion of commissioners responsibilities • Chaired by Deb Verson • Food i. Dorfler's - on board to do the sandwiches -$1.20, will wrap them at no charge instead of doing the toothpicks - How many will we need? ii. Fridays - on board for salads iii. McDonalds - need to double check on cookies iv. Walgreens at Lake Cook and Buffalo Grove Road - new manager has requested a letter for a donation of 750 bottles of water 1. Rick has the letter we used last year, Rick will give letter to Mark who will make a copy with specific wording 2. Mark will use the same tax letter from last year v. Deb will ask Pete about pasta (pasta and sauce only, no meatballs and no breadsticks vi. Deb will check on silverware vii. Vendors/non-profits will not be able to set up booths until 12pm and not able to sell food until 12:30pm - this will be monitored, if anyone sees it let Rick know immediately viii. Public Works will put up barricades to help with "crowd control" ix. Ideas 1. Sandwich and chips in the clamshell, brown bag with other items 2. Foam trays/Cafeteria trays (Deb look into cost from GFS to see if we can submit to the Village for purchase) 3. Give a clamshell with salad and pasta, then we bring around chips and waters to people 4. Spread out chips on the tables ahead of time 5. Containers that close so they are stackable 6. Ask for feedback from people at the event x. Sponsors 1. Deb sent an email to Carole Sente but hasn't heard back yet 2. Mark will reach out to Sherry Schneider and Beth Robowski 3. Marty will reach out to Dan Diedich and Jonathon Carroll • Registration i. Link works for registration ii. Emails will be sent to Rick through funandfood(&vbg.org iii. Wristbands for rides iv. Stamps for food v. Will need 3-4 people at the registration to help with photo waivers vi. The Village wants us to have waivers signed for the event 1. Rick and Brian will double check with the Village that this is necessary 2. Can we put up a big sign saying that pictures will be taken and by coming to the event you are consenting to having your picture taken and used for publication? • Shuttle sponsors = Buffalo Grove Park District and Belmont Village i. There will be 3 shuttles at any given time ii. Rick will send around a sign-up sheet next month • Parade - Deb has the form (need to get in touch with Larry about tables and truck) - we need people to walk (cub scouts? Boy scouts?) • Buddy Baseball i. Game is September 1st at 4:00pm ii. T-Shirts - we have 51 orange shirts (nothing larger than XL) and have assorted gray shirts iii. We can order 55 new orange shirts in larger sizes (use the new shirts first and then the old shirts as backups if we run out) 1. Need to order: 5 L, 20 XL, 20 XXL, 10 XXXL iv. Brett says his guys will draw up a logo as close to the old logo as possible v. Shirts run between $2.25 and $5 vi. Dean will email his friend Stu at Lou's about pizza for the event vii. Do we want to reach out to the high schools for students who need community service hours to get more buddies? viii. Who do we want to throw out the first pitch? (consider at the next meeting) VI. Chairman's Report • 3 big nice handicap accessible toilets for Fun & Food • K-9 comfort and service dogs will be coming again this year • Rick asked to have the slope fixed in front of the food tent • Flat surface on cement for shuttle spot VII.
