2017-05-24 - Commission for Residents with Disabilities - Minutes Download Document 05/24/2017 MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE COMMISSION FOR RESIDENTS WITH DISABILITIES OF THE VILLAGE OF BUFFALO GROVE HELD IN THE COUNCIL CHAMBERS, 50 RAUPP BOULEVARD, BUFFALO GROVE, ILLINOIS ON WEDNESDAY, MAY 24, 2017 Call to Order The meeting was called to order at 7:04 PM by Board Member Richard Kahen Approval of Minutes 1. April 26th meeting. Introduction of Guests, if any Introduction of Dave Weidenfeld, new trustee liason Chair Report 1. Review of Building/Zoning meeting Met with Brian Sheehan & Chris Stilling and asked to keep handicap parking survey on file and use if something comes up for re-striping or possible future redevelopment. Brian Sheehan will come to our next meeting. Discussion then ensued on sidewalk requirements for unincorporated areas. Woodman's is breaking ground in approximately a month and CRD will monitor the project. 2. Review of Broadway Buddies Broadway Buddies did a performance of Grease and it was a great show. 3. CRD shirts CRD is getting new shirts which needs to be through Village approved vendor. Trustee Report Trustee Stein will no longer be the CRD liason. He will be missed and the Commissioners thanked him for all he has done for the Commission and his dedication. Also, his son collected over 300 toys for Advocate through his toy drive initiative. Trustee Weidenfeld indicated that they are currently working on creating a Village 501(c)(3)organization, This can be used for grants or other charitable donations. This will allow allocation of funds for individual commissions or initiative. Also, funds can be earmarked specifically for CRD and not go through Village's budget process. Hoping to have it set up by the end of the year. Initial investment by the village is $10,000. Sub-Committee Report a. Legislative & Disability news There has not been a lot of news as no bills have been passed recently. House Bill 2808 was proposed which allocates funds specifically for special ed. New Federal Healthcare bill could potentially cut$4 billion in disability services through Medicaid. b. Communications & Publications Trying to have a small article/blurb in every Village newsletter. Commissioner Swieca will update the website. Channel 6 will also be utilized. Want to update CRD brochure. C. Village business/ADA d. Community Awareness Projects &Activities Will make a shift towards recognition instead of parties or bookmarks. Suggested looking at schools and recognizing students who are making a difference in the disability community. Also suggested looking at local businesses in the community which have make a difference but need specific criteria. The ADA hasn't changed since 1992 but the nunber of disabled individuals has risen. Suggestion to raise handicap parking violation fines and Trustee Weidenfeld indicated we can take idea to Village Manager to discuss. The Vernon Township lending closet does not have any fees to use except for a deposit of$50 for wheelchairs., They do not clean it:rather, they operate on the honor system for people who take out the item to clean it. Wheeling Township also has their own lending library for Cook county. May want to promote the lending closet in the newsletter. e. BG Days update We are waiting to get more information.
