`- ' Minutes of August 2S, 1994
The meeting was called to order by Chairperson Harriet Rubinstein nt 7.•10 P.M.
Members in Attendance: Bonnie Factor, Karolyn Swanson, Gina Sheade, llage Trustee
C'harles Hendricks, aui Park District Liaison Dan Schimmel. Bonnie Simone, Adult Program
Supervisor for the Northwest Area JCC was also in attendance.
Correspondence - Harriet shared several pieces of correspondence with the commission,
some of which were passed on to Gina for inclusion in the library.
Resource Library Update - Gina reponed that work was continuing on adding materials to
the library. Much of what was received at the Service Providers meeting was xcellent.
Commission members discussed several action items which park district and village sta,,j`'were
asked to incorporate into their marketing. 7hey are as follows:
Providing information in the brochure on the existence of the Joint Commission and
its meeting dates and times. Also, should be included in village newsletters,
welcome wagon pamphlets, and chamber information.
Providing a listing of the commission members
Press releases on the Resource Library
Provide listing on how the materials in the library are categorized
Having a flier describing our Commission available for BG Days.
Old Business - The commission reviewed the ideas which came out of the Service Providers
meeting held on June 7, 1994. Much of the discussion focused on transportation problems
which older adults face. The problem of township buses crossing boundary lines was discussed
along with the di,,`'erent types of taxi services that are available in di,,"erent communities.
Karolyn Swanson mentioned that she had spent quite a bit of dme working on this rype of
problem only to end up with no solution. The group consensus was that even though the fight
may be di,,cult, that we should take on the challenge. A decision was made for interested
parries to meet as a sub committee on August 30th, 2:00 p.m. The purpose of the meeting is
to set an agenda and invite area legislators and township o,,`'icials to a meeting to discuss the
transponation problems of older adults. Mention was made to invite the village's disability
and transponation commissions to also panicipate in this e,,`'ort. Tentatively, the date of this
"summit" is scheduled for mid to late October.
Other discussion on the service providers meeting centered on starting a lending closet and
also working on a "household chores"service of older residents. The sta,,`'was directed to
contact Bu,,`'alo Grove and Stevenson High School sta,,`'to see if these rypes of services are
already in place.

( Commission members also suggested that we stan listing twv to three valuable communiry
resources for seniors in each brochure or newslener. An added service for the community.
Gina suggested that we contact all participants at the last service providers meeting to cancel
the planned meeting on September 14th. Dan will send out a letter to that e,,`'ect.
New Business -Harriet Rubinstein reviewed the work of the Northwest Communiry Hospital
Advisory Council on Aging. Included in her presentation was their upcoming schedule of
topics. Harriet also gave a report on the Lake County Senior Expo held recentty. Harriet
reported that the session she presented on Intergenerational Progranuning went well with
many staying afler to talk longer. Congratulatiorrs to Harriet!
There being no other business to discuss, Karolyn Swanson motioned to adjourn the meeting
at 8:45 P.M.
Respectfully submitted by Dan Schimmel on August 26, 1994.

Re: Service Providers Brain Storming Facercise Results
Date: August 25, 1994
Please find below the many ideas generated by service providers at our June Breald'ast Meing.
Transportation - In general, is a problem for all seniors night since those dat do drive, usuaily
will not attempt to at night.
During the day, older adults need help getxing to stores, visiting friends, going to the dotors,
church/synagogues, community events.
Need to do something about getting towaship bse.s to cross boundary lines.
f Village of Vernon Hills has their own bus service.

This commission should recognize that we shaze many of te same concerns as the Commission on
Disabilities. Perhaps some joint efforts could be launched.
Older adults often have the need for help with household chores and repairs. Some churches help
already. What can we do to help?
Must be flexible. The needs of today will not be the same as in 5 to 10 years from now.
Role of the Libraries - More discussion prograrns on issues and books of special interest. Probably a
need for more day time rather than evening programs. More "intergenerational' program
opportunities at the libraries and park districts.
Facilitating the provision of services in a two county siwation. How can we help bridge the gaps.
Affordable Housing - Small, congregate settings. Subsid'zed?
Weekend programming and uansportation for seniors.
Make seniors feel more welcome and part of the community.
Use older adults as a resource for the communities. Find ways to allow them to contribute.
Find a more proactive way to disseminate information oo seniors on available services.
