Joint Commission on Aging
Meeting 1Vlinutes of
January 25, 1996
The meeting was called to order by Vice Chair Bonnie Factor at 7:05 PM.
Members in Attendance: Bonnie Factor, Gina Sheade, Diane Breslow, Laura Werner,
Karolyn Swanson, Phil Versten, and Dan Schimmel.
Additiorrs to the Agenda: Items added under Old Business included the taxi cab information and
the "triade" program information published in the recent Village Newsletter.
Minutes: 1Vfinutes from September 28, 1995 and June 22, 1995 were approved as drafted. As
there was not a quorum for the December meeting, there were not any minutes taken. However,
a verbal summary of Bonnie Factor's slide presentation was presented. Dan did mention that
Bonnie will be making a slide presentation to the Park District Board of Commissioners on
February 12 and a presentation to the Active Agers on Monday, March 20th at 10:15 AM. All
Joint Commission members are invited to attend this wonderful program.
Correspondence: Dan informed the Commission that the Park District now has a "home page" on
the Internet. This home page is designed to tell the general public about the progams and
services offered by the park district. A sheet with the home page address and e-mail numbers for
the park district was distributed.
Senior Services Survey: Phil Versten presented the preliminary results of the Senior Survey
which were published in the recent Village Newsletter. Over 15,000 surveys were mailed to
homes and businesses in Buffalo Grove. Only 135 usable surveys were returned. As part of Phil's
presentation of the results, he distributed a table showing the growth rates or various age groups
in Buffalo Grove. Seniors accounted for the fastest growth rate showing a jump of 21.5%. The
results of the survey were quite interesting and will prove to be helpful in the planning processes
for the park district and the village. Final results may be ready by our next meeting.
As part of this discussion it was mentioned that perhaps a survey should be distributed to the
different religious organizations in town to find out about the services they are offering. Dan
mentioned that this was done before and that their was very little response. As a result, we had
organized the "Service Providers" meeting. It was the general consensus of the Commission that
this type of event should again be scheduled.
Are You OK? Update: Phil reported that the Are You OK? program was not in operation in the
Cook County side of Buffalo Grove. He did not think that any organization was really interested
in developing the program. There was some discussion at this point about the information that
was presented in the Village Newsletter in relation to the triade program. Though there was no
argument that the information presented in the newsletter was wonderful, Bonnie did mention that
the Commission should receive recognition whenever it initiates a study, investigation, new
`/ r'
service etc. This helps promote the activities and support for the work of the Committee. Both
the park district and the village liaisons will work to make sure that tius occurs.
Phil also mentioned the "Walk! Don't Wallc!" article in the newsletter. The story was written
because people get confused about how much time is really available to cross streets at
crosswalks. It appears that many seniors would begin crossing at the walk signal, the Don't Walk
signal would appear, and the senior would think there wasn't enough time and would go back.
This led to several complaints by seniors. •
Resource Libraries Update: Gina reported that new materials had not been added to the library.
Senior Prograrms Update: Dan mentioned several upcoming events and distributed the January
newsletter.
New Business: The following topics will be on the next agenda:
Senior Services Directory
Survey
Service Provider Meeting-June 4, 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM
Old Business: Was discussed under "Are You OK?"
