Buffalo Grove Joint Commission on Aging
Meeting Summary
Apri125, 1997
Members Present-Bonnie Factor, Diane Breslow, Karolyn Swanson, Phil Versten and Dan
Schimmel. (Excused-Harriet Rubinstein, Laura Werner, Gina Sheade).
Guest(s) -Ernie Karge, Rotary Club of Buffalo Grove
The meeting was called to order by Vice Chairman Bonnie Factor at 7:00 PM.
Correspondence-Harriet Rubinstein was nominated by the Village of Buffalo Grove to receive
the Cook County Sheriff s Department"Senior Medal of Hanor" in recognition of her volunteer
service to the community. This medal was presented to Harriet on April 22 at the Chicago
Cultural Center.
Dan mentioned that the Park District Board of Commissioners is interested in reappointing all of
its representatives on the Joint Commission on Aging. He explained that the Village appoints
three representatives and the Park District appoints four including the Chairman. Dan will be
contacting the Park District representatives to determine their interest in returning. All
appointments for the Park District and the Village should be made in May.
Business
Senior Directory- The Directory has been distributed to all the seniors in the Senior Club at the
Park District. Those not in attendance at recent meetings received their directory in the mail. In
addition, copies have been distributed to the libraries, Village Hall and Alcott Center. Senior
Coordinator Tem Ebner and Chairman Harriet Rubinstein did a great job gathering the
information while Phil put the directory in its final format.
Rotary Club Invitation -Bonnie Factor will be speaking at the Rotary Club of Buffalo Grove
meet�ng on May 22. There was extensive discussion on topics that could be covered. In addition
Ernie spent some time explaining the wide variety of service projects undertaken by the Club.
The Club holds their lunch meeting at Lou 1Vlalnatti's.
Open House- The following particulars were decided:
1)Mission-"A community event featuring agencies who will inform and educate the
community about the services and resources they provide for older adults and their
families."
2)Date- Tuesday, September 9, 1-3 PM
3)Location - Village Hall Council Chambers
4) Target Audience- Older Adults (60 and Over) and their families
5) Invitation List -Possible list distributed, will review for next meeting
6)Exhibitors List - Same as above, must be non for profits, a resource table will be made

7)Public Notices -To be printed in the Fall Park District Brochure, Village Newsletter,
Senior Club Newsletter, and local press.
8)Progam Ideas-Not really pursued except to agree not to have speakers on senior --
issues.
9)Policy regarding"for profit" participation- The organization will be for non for profits.
10) Transportation-Dan will check to see if we could use a neighboring park districts bus
or luxury van for senior pick ups at local churches or synagogues. Also discussed
was the possibility of using the Cook County Sherii�s Van. Phil will check with
them.

Village-Phil presented materials on the Taxi Service usage over the past year.
Park Dist:ict -Dan shared the Senior Newsletter. Also brought the Commission uF tt� datte an the ---
Wellness Center.
Other-Bonnie brought in the"File of Life" program information. Its a plastic envelope with a
magnetic strip on the back. In the envelop is card stock that is printed so the senior can put all of
his/her critical care information. The File of Life can then be placed on the refrigerator in the
event of an emergency. Costing about $.60 each, it seemed to be an expensive program if a
sponsor could be secured.
The next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, June 26 at 7:00 PM.
