Buffalo Grove Joint Commission on Aging
Meeting Summary of February 19, 1998
The Meeting was called to order by Chairman Hamet Rubinstein at 7:05 pm.
Members in Attendance: Diane Breslow, Bonnie Factor, Gina Sheade, Harriet Rubinstein, and
Park District Liaison Dan Schimmel.
Guests in Attendance: Fran Eagan-Park District Senior Club Advisory Council Member and
Joanne Shapiro-Senior Club Member.
Motion was made by Bonnie Factor and seconded by Gina Sheade to approve the November 20,
1997 Meeting Summary. Motion passed.
Conespondence- The booklet from the Northwestern University Alumni Association citing
Harriet Rubinstein's citizenship award was shared with the Commission.
"How to" Guidebook-Harriet and the commission discussed the merits of this guide. The book
would be dedicated for seniors as a quick emergency guide for difficult situations requiring help
from the police, fire, utility companies and other urgent care providers. Basically, a guide that
would help seniors when an emergency develops. Risk Manager Dave Knarr of the Buffalo
Grove Park District will help out in developing this guidebook. There was also discussion on the
distribution of the guide. Thoughts including direct distribution to seniors in the park district club
and advertising its availability in various local publications.
New Business
Budget Changes/Staffing - The Park District is planning on hiring part time senior
coordinator Tem Ebner on as a full time senior coordinator. Because of program growth
and the desire to develop new services for seniors, Dan made this recommendation to the
Board of Commissioners. Though subject to final approval by the Park District Board,
Dan feels that the position will be approved. The new position would start on May 1.
Old Business
File of Life Cards -Dan reported that the File of Life Cards through the distributor cost at
least $.58 each. With a distribution of at least 1,000, and up to 4,500 if all seniors in
Buffalo Grove were included, cost would be $580 - $2,600. Since the Commission itself
doesn't have a budget, limited funds are available. Dan is still checking on other sources
for the magnet cards volunteering to print the inserts on card stock at the Park District.
Bus - Bonnie reported that the source from Mitsubishi won't work in our case.
Apparently this program is really only available for countries outside the United States.

Senior Club -Fran expressed her frustration with getting seniors to volunteer for projects.
A project she would definitely like to see developed would include seniors visiting house
bound seniors. The group discussed training and liability issues and encouraged Fran to
consider getting involved with an existing program in the area instead of trying to start
one from scratch.
Health Fitness Center-Dan reported on the progess of this project. It is at the design
phase and the project will go to bid in late March.
Golf Dome Learning Center-Dan reported that this project is undergoing Village review.
If approved, it would constructed and running by November of 1998.
Village U-No report.
The meeting adjourned at 8:15 pm.
