2000-06-15 - Committee on Aging - Minutes Buffalo Grove Joint Commission on Aging Meeting Summary for June 15,2000 Buffalo Grove Learning Center Members Present—Chairman Bonnie Factor,Ernie Karge,Gina Sheade,Village Liaison DeAnn Glover, and Park District Liaison Dan Schimmel. Members Excused—Karolyn Swanson Guests—Police Officers Steve Haisley and Bob LeGere Bonnie Factor called the meeting to order at 7:10 PM. Guest Introduction and Report—Steve and Bob introduced themselves and were asked to report on the services the police department provide to assist seniors in the community. Steve reported that Officer Warnine Krueger had spent many hours working with the seniors at the park district senior center activities. She had a special kind of love for the seniors and wanted to work with the seniors. Warnine was a certified elder abuse counselor by training, but her role extended well beyond that role. She helped coordinate many workshops presented by the police department as well as personally getting involved in the many activities at the center. Following the loss of Warnine, Steve and Bob have frequently visited the senior center to help continue building the comfort level with the police department. They feel that there is a good relationship between the club seniors and the police officers but are looking for opportunities to get more involved with seniors...either by services to seniors,or involving seniors in volunteer opportunities at the station. Bonnie described the Elmhurst SALT program and gave Steve the contact person's name(Bill Friese). Steve was also very interested in expanding the File for Life project so that it got out to more seniors in the community. Options were discussed on how to distribute as well as whether or not the file card should be simplified. Other Ideas Discussed: Developing a listing of all senior service providers Putting quarterly blurbs in the village newsletter on senior services Changing the cable information so that it is scheduled(ie.Police news at 00:15,Village news at 00:25, School News at 00:40) Using the internet to pass on information In summary, it appears that the police department is very willing to provide services for seniors and to work with anyone else who has the same type of interest. Meeting Summary Approval—Ernie made a motion, seconded by Gina,to approve the meeting summary from May 25,2000. Motion Carried. Business Survey of Area Townships.Villages and Park Districts—The survey was expanded to seek specific responses to"Do you provide the following services?" We then brainstormed on the services. Service Providers Meeting—After some discussion,it was decided that we did not have enough time to develop a program for the fall. We will attempt to schedule this event in April,2001.
