2006-02-23 - 50th Anniversary Committee - Minutes Board or Commission: ❑ 50th Anniversary Committee Document Type: ❑Agenda 0 Minutes Meeting Date: 02/23/2006 Type of Meeting: ❑ Regular Meeting VILLAGE OF BUFFALO GROVE/50TH ANNIVERSARY COMMITTEE The first meeting of the 50th Anniversary Committee met on February 23, 2006. The meeting was called to order at 7:15 pm in the Council Chambers at Buffalo Grove Village Hall. In Attendance: Janet Sirabian Rich Heinrich Mike Terson Lou Ellison Barbara Herman Mo Welborn Carl Genrich Jill Kaplan Judy Yublonsky Paulette Greenberg George Krug Craig Horowitz Judith Siria Also attending were: Karen from the Daily Herald Newspaper & Mary from Indian Trails Library. After all introductions were made, Janet explained the outline she had for the 50Th Anniversary of Buffalo Grove Celebration. She would like activities, one a month, for six months, beginning March 7, 2008 and ending at Buffalo Grove Days August 28-September 1, 2008. Buffalo Grove was incorporated on March 7, 1958. She would like a reception/dinner/type activity for March 7, 2008, a Friday night. Discussion on where this could be held. For 200 or so people, the Arboretum is a possibility. Mike suggested the Golf Dome the park district has along RT 83. The dome is up until April 1st. Also discussed was the Field house at Buffalo Grove High School. All agreed the Golf Dome would be the best choice if possible to hold the event there. Over 500 people could easily fit in the Dome. Rather than charge $$per person, maybe a `donation' request would be by the entrance. Some sort of food (hors d'oeuvres?), cash bar and music (the BY Symphonic Band/BG Singers with 50's music?) for entertainment. Mike works for the BG Park District. He will check into this and advise the Committee, if the golf dome could be used for this event. Janet would like a calendar made up to be given to each household in the Village. She suggested the photos be black &white, perhaps a collage type, maybe changing to color photos as the year progressed. She would like to see notations of the historical events that occurred in Buffalo Grove noted on the appropriate dates (first village president elected, Lake Cook Road opens etc) Janet also suggested a magazine type booklet of the history of Buffalo Grove from 1958 to present. This also would be distributed to each household. Debbie at the BG Museum has wanted to write up some sort of history of the Village, and perhaps she would agree to contribute to this project. Janet will discuss w/Debbie and advise the Committee. Historical information could be displayed at the Museum and the display cases at the Buffalo Grove Post Office. This information could also be used as a traveling exhibit to the schools in the area, as part of their Civics' classes. Another item would be to have the BG Players stage `Grease' for the spring show. We will have to coordinate with park district for that program. A 50's car show for June or August of 2008. Paulette's neighbor is involved with these car clubs and has agreed to help organize event. Aside from the cars displayed, a tent with model cars to make, and other items of similar interest would be included. Buffalo Grove Days would be the end of the Celebration. A 50's theme for that weekend including music, games/activities is possible, per Paulette the Co-Chairman of BG Days Committee. Other items discussed: time capsule created and to be buried. Chocolate `medallions' made up w/ buffalo logo. (Pass out freebie or nominal charge??);perhaps Long Grove Confectionary could produce; note cards with BG scenes for sale; sock hop in parking lot with car show; a blanket with 50th anniversary logo for sale; commemorative Illinois State license plates; contacting famous people who used to live in Buffalo Grove to attend a function; We do want to get school children involved and not exclude the seniors especially those that have lived here since the beginning of the Village. A logo for the entire theme of this celebration needs to be created. Logo may also become the vehicle sticker that year. Discussed contacting local high schools, and asking students 14-18 years old to participate. This would have to be done for the 2006-07 school year in order to have the chosen logo used. Banners on light poles throughout the village also suggested. Another issue is fundraising. Janet advised the Village has agreed to give her a budget but the amount has not yet been determined. Fundraising may be difficult as the BG Chamber of Commerce solicits from area businesses for their annual booklet. The BG Arts Commission will be soliciting for their 16 month calendar. BG Day's Committee solicits for the weekend event every year. We cannot keep asking the same businesses for money. Janet did state she did not want the BG Chamber of Commerce to be involved with fundraising for this event. The meeting ended with the agreement committees need to be organized for various parts of the celebration. We may meet alternate months for now. The calendar and historical booklet need to be started at this time. The meeting adjourned at 9:00 P.M. Next meeting: Tuesday April 4 2006, 7pm Village Hall.
