Meeting called to order 7:15pm
Introductions made all around. Welcome to new members: Joan & Ernie Karge, Beverly Bloom, Jay
Bloom, Bruce Peters.
Discussion began on the overall feel of the 50th anniversary celebration. Janet discussed
surrounding towns and their commemorative events. She had a book from Skokie for their 100th
Anniversary. (A hardcover book was designed). For BG's 50th, Janet would like something w/
similar information pertaining to Buffalo Grove, in a soft cover with good paper stock pages. Any
advertisements sold are to be listed in the back of the book (not listed alongside an article); an
acknowledgment page of sponsors may be listed in the front of the booklet.
Janet passed out copies of a 1961 Village Homeowner's News Letter and a 1958-1959 tax levy
information sheet. She would like this info incorporated into the historical book.
Other information to be included: when schools opened; shopping centers opened; Lake Cook Road
opening etc. District 21 will have information on the schools. Debbie at the BG Museum has lots of
photos to use and other reference material. The police department was formed in 1961 and the fire
department in 1980.
Bruce Peters suggests St. Mary's may have info on the people/families in the cemeteries that could
be used.
Lou suggests the VFW post may have items for the display case or to display that weekend?
Barbara Heinrich suggests interviewing residents for their recollections of 50 years ago. She also
suggested putting this material on the Village Web site when completed.
Carl made up a tentative timetable to be used in putting the calendar together.
We agreed all are good ideas, for the History/Calendar committee to pursue.
Janet will mention at Village Board Meeting, asking residents for help in gathering information or
items that could be put on display March 7-9th weekend.
Jay supports going to local businesses and their graphic arts department for assistance in making the
Logo. Janet reminded the group we had previously discussed getting the teens in the village
involved by asking the three local high schools and their art/graphic arts department to enter a
competition to make the Logo. Beverly Sussman has AIM printing who will most likely be working
with the local schools and printing it.
For the dinner dance of March 7, 2008, Greg Lundgren at the Arboretum has booked the date for
this event. Committee will need to determine a guest list and to be sure to include past trustees and
other village officials. We may need help from the Village in securing addresses. Proposed cost is
$50 per person. . Jay would like to have former Village presidents, not pay. Janet said the plan is
for everyone to pay.
For March 8-9, 2008, we will use the Golf Dome for the family activity. 2nd choice is the Village
Hall. We will have the historical display, Veteran's display etc. The bouncy inflatable will be outside.
Paulette checked with Astro Amusements: if they supply there will be no charge. If we want an
attendant, the fee will be approx $250-300.
Janet is still checking with the Fire Dept and Building & Zoning offices about the logistics of where
to hold the family day(s) activities
Barbara Herman is working with the BG Symphony for a 50's concert. Date is not yet decided.
Barbara reminded the group, the band plays for a concert in May, 4th of July, and in October.
Perhaps an outdoor concert that summer and ice cream social? Janet suggested maybe 1 st or 2nd
week of August, before High Schools start up. The buildings would still be available
BG Singers maybe could sing with a sing-along type of music show? Date undecided or to be
coordinated with the BG Band?
Logo: Beverly Sussman will contact the three area high schools for student participation. Beginning
fall 2006 and ending December 2006. This will give time for chosen Logo to be developed onto
Village Stationary, light pole banners, Village stickers etc.
It was brought up: 2008 is the 35th Anniversary of Buffalo Grove High School. They may want to
do something that year too.
Janet was contacted recently by a Park District Commissioner who suggested making a movie about
Buffalo Grove.
Note cards/blankets: Janet knows of an artist who may be able to make up the sketches of places
around Buffalo Grove. Chosen Logo will be used on the blanket, and other items to sell.
Play: Janet is working with the park district to see if they will do `Grease" as their seasonal play.
Car Show: Paulette needs a date to work with. June still has the baseball teams playing in Emmerich
Park (we cannot use the parking lot on the south side of Lake Cook Rd). Weekend of June 21-22,
2008 was chosen. Paulette will contact local car clubs. She explained they will bring in cars and
usually prizes are given (we would give) for `best condition' etc. Also in the plans are hands- on
model car building for children and a sock hop at night. Agreed the show cars will be parked around
Village Hall in a U-shape pattern. In the public works lot, a tent where the model cars etc would be
in the day time. Saturday night, this would become the sock hop. Moving tables and general
cleanup would be needed to change events. Either a juke box would be rented or a dj playing 50's
music would be included. Dancers wearing poodle skirts &pony tails and the guys in t-shirts with
empty cigarette packs rolled up in their sleeves. The next day, back to the model car building 11 am
to 3pm or so. Also envisioned is ice cream vendor (chilly willy) and a hot dog vendor etc. For this
event, we will need police presence to secure the cars overnight.
Display cases - Mary Jo not present. Post office display cases will show historical items perhaps on
loan from residents. Or copies of the information passed out tonight from 1959.
Time Capsule: Craig needs ideas on what to put into the time capsule. He plans to contact village
employees, BG Chamber of Commerce, local high schools class presidents& officers for selection
and inclusion of items. Suggestions included copies of the Daily Herald, Pioneer Press and Chicago
newspapers for the week the Time Capsule will be closed. Need to decide where to bury it. Where
to purchase a leak proof container. Size etc.
Anniversary State of Illinois license plates: these plates are limited to 60-90 days of use. They go
in front of regular Illinois plate. Cost $50. Ernie & Joan Karge will work on this committee.
Candy: Paulette has contacted Long Grove Confectionery. They will make the candy. They have
molds for either a 2 inch medallion or a coin size piece. They will produce individually wrapped
pieces. The coin size we would get approx 60 pieces per pound. They cannot give us prices until
they see the Logo. Their artist would make the art work for the candy. Since we plan to pass out
the candy, the coin size will be best, per Janet.
Craig has a friend who owns a food company that makes pizza and pasta products. Janet suggested
he ask his friend if they could produce something to us to sell at on of the events. (Buffalo shaped
pasta?)
Sponsorships: Janet advised it is too early to approach businesses. Although she had a lead from
LaSalle Bank. They are interested in being a sponsor/contributor. Richard suggests local car dealers
may want to sponsor the car show.
Jane Olson needs all Talent Bank and Oaths signed and returned to her if you don't already have
one on file with the Village.
Janet reminded it is now time for the Committees to meet outside of this meeting and begin
gathering information and assembling ideas and report back to this Committee at future meetings.
Next meeting June 29, 2006 7:00 pm
