Meeting called to order at 7:15 pm
Introductions all around as we welcomed 3 new members: Rachel Hong, Jack Schmerer & Jennie
Spallone.
Committee statements were returned and passed out.
Committee Reports:
Barb Herman: Dinner/Dance - the members of this subcommittee previously met as a group and
have several questions, i.e. what is their budget for entertainment, food decorations etc?
They had several ideas for entertainment including strolling musicians, High School bands, BG
Symphonic Band. They also thought of a slide show. (Janet described the slide show from Bill
Balling's retirement party that was a big hit). Perhaps small tables in the hall for small group
conversation. Dance floor- may not be wise, space reasons and will anyone really dance or prefer to
talk to others.
For the rest of that weekend: Saturday/Sunday family day in the Golf Dome, a free event for local
families. Janet envisions free hotdogs and soft drinks as people look at the displays.
Discussed it may be wise to divide this committee into 2 parts - the Friday night dinner and the family
activities for Saturday/Sunday.
Janet explained no budget has yet been determined by the Village. Dinner is anticipated to cost $50
per person. 300 people for the dinner, with a cash bar. Menu to be determined. Instead of a dance
floor maybe a staging area with microphone for short speeches.
Paulette Greenberg: Buffalo Grove Days Committee - too early to plan but the theme will be
centered on the 50th Anniversary.
Symphonic Band: Barb has a meeting with them July 20th, a small fee will have to be charged if
they perform a concert, as they have to pay for the music (unless corporate sponsorship can be
found).
Beverly Sussman: Logo - she has not contacted Stevenson High School yet concerning the students
designing a logo. Craig Horwitz has spoken with an art teacher & graphic design teacher at Buffalo
Grove High School. The response was positive and the Logo will be discussed in September with
class members. Jennie Spallone volunteered to contact Wheeling High School and their art/graphic
design programs. Janet wants this class project to be done the Ist marking period of fall 2006, so we
have time to choose and work with the logo for the various items.
Mike brought in a sketch he made of an enhanced Village Logo that could be used or improved
upon.
We want the committee to have the control of choosing the designs.
If we choose one of the submitted designs, we can have the student's photo and name in the paper.
Jennie wanted this to be a contest with I st place 2nd place etc. Janet says this will not be a contest.
We are looking for design ideas. If we do not like the submission by the high school students, we
can contact a graphic designer to make one up. We also have to be concerned how intricate the
design is: to be used for the vehicle sticker, stationery, light pole banners, the chocolate coins etc.
Note Cards/Blankets: Janet knows of an artist who can do pencil type sketches. Also suggested,
having the Seniors at the Alcott Center submit designs for the note cards and blankets. The entries
can be dropped off at the Alcott Center. Seniors don't have to be members to submit entries. We
can use the bulletins at the various churches & synagogues to reach these people. Blankets can be
made in batches of a dozen, so we could use several designs for this item. Ernie & Joan can get the
bids on the blankets. Selling price may be around $30-35 each.
Park District Play: Janet still is working on it. If not "Grease" perhaps some other I950's themed
musical/play.
Car Show: Paulette says it is still too early to make definite plans. Ideas include classic cars being
on display in the public works' parking lot and perhaps around Village Hall. A large tent with
hands-on car models for the kids to build. Small food vendors i.e.: hot dogs, pop and Chilly Willy on
hand. Looking for a car dealer to sponsor. Then various activities including a hula hoop contest,
decorated bikes and parade etc. In the evening, a sock hop with either a DJ playing 50's music or
renting a juke box with lots of Elvis music.
License Plates: Ernie explained the Fire Department sold all 200 specialty plates that were made up
for their 25th anniversary celebration. Ernie has the paperwork for the applications. Cost will be
determined by number of colors in the design. Projected price is $25 and will be valid for 60 days.
Time Capsule: ideas to put into the time capsule are current Village budget as of March 2008,
zoning information, scroll signed by village officials, aerial photos of Buffalo Grove in 2008, copies
of local newspapers, have 2nd & 3rd graders write stories how they envision the world in 50 years,
etc
It has not been decided where the time capsule will be buried.
Janet reminded us that many neighboring villages will also be having 50th anniversaries in the next
year or two. Local towns all came to be around the same time frame include Schaumburg, Hanover
Park, Elk Grove, and Lincolnshire etc.
Chocolate: Paulette reports Long Grove Confectionary has agreed to produce the candy. We can
have one or two sided design. If the logo that is selected is too complicated, we may just use a
buffalo on one side and "50th anniversary" on the other. Design to be determined. Rich suggested
maybe we can secure corporate sponsorship for the cost. Rather than pass out the candy, Janet
suggests a nominal charge of 25 cents each.
History/Calendar: Beverly Sussman explained the committee has already met and came up with
ideas on producing both items. They are open to suggestions for labeling on the calendar. Joanne
Johnson will accept e-mails for ideas. Janet suggested Bill Means has boxes of old photos and
perhaps would allow some to be used. Calendar will be totally in black &white. More cost efficient
than color copies. And this will make the calendar unique.
For the history booklet, it will be produced in color. They have decided on several sections to focus
on including:
1. Early History (prior to incorporation)
2. First Years (village seal, costs, area growth
3. Expanding Years for both counties the shopping/housing,
4. Government, including the Police & Fire departments, village officials, committees/volunteers etc.
5. Education ; history of the different schools being built/school districts etc
6. Religious organizations/churches synagogues
7. Civic Jaycees, Rotary groups,
8. Parks &recreation; BGRA, Buffalo Bills, Buddy Ball
9. Things that make BG click including Buffalo Grove Days, Arts Festival, and Fireworks etc
IO.Direction Buffalo Grove is headed for the next 50 years.
Janet reminded the committee Debbie at Raupp Museum is a good resource for this material. Joan
has a book from Blanche Kloman, an original resident of the area.
Size of the book- maybe 150 pages, soft cover. Jack offered to make a CD of all the photos with
sound, for a show and for sale. He made a similar CD for Deerfield and it was well received. This
could be played at the anniversary dinner and on Channel 6. Deerfield made up 1000 copies and
gave them away.
Janet passed out sign up sheets for various committees for members to join.
Next meeting will be Wednesday, August 9, 2006 at 7:00 pm. Meeting adjourned at 9.10 pm
