Board of Fire and Police Commissioners
Minutes of Regular Meeting October 2, 2007
CALL TO ORDER and ROLL CALL:
The meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by Chairman Viehman in the Fire Department
Administrative Conference Room. Commissioner Dibbern called the roll and noted for the
record that a quorum was present at the meeting. Present were Chairman Viehman,
Commissioners Karge, Lukatsky and Dibbern. Absent was Commissioner Loeb. Also in
attendance were Police Chief Steve Balinski, Fire Chief Tim Sashko, and HR Director Mr. Art
Malinowski.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
Commissioner Lukatsky made a motion to approve the minutes of the BFPC Regular Meeting of
September 4, 2007, seconded by Commissioner Karge. The motion was approved by a voice
vote. Commissioner Karge made a motion to approve the minutes of the BFPC Special Meeting
of September 11, 2007, seconded by Commissioner Lukatsky. The motion was approved by a
voice vote.
CHAIRMAN'S REPORT:
Chairman Viehman offered congratulations to Commissioner Dibbern on her retirement from
The Gillette Company after 28 years of service, and to her new journeys in the Buffalo Grove
community and the Peoria, AZ community. He also looked forward to her continued activity
with this Board. Chairman Viehman also wished special recognition on behalf of the Board to
Chief Tim Sashko for his service to the BG Fire Department, for his leadership as its Chief, for
his assignments and recognitions that have cast such favorable light upon the Village he has so
professionally represented, and for his assistance and cooperation with this Board of Fire and
Police Commissioners in helping it to complete its functions in support of the Village and Fire
Department. He thanked him on behalf of the volunteer commissioners on this Board, and
personally as its chair, for guidance and understanding in the matters of the Board. He will be
missed but his influence will live on positively in the function of the BG Fire Department and
Chairman Viehman congratulated Chief Sashko on his exceptional service and the leadership
that he will carry forth to a new department in Mundelein. Chairman Viehman wished Chief
Sashko the best as he faces new challenges, with sincere THANKS!
COMMISSIONER'S REPORT:
Commissioners had no news to report.
CHIEF REPORTS:
Chief Balinski noted that Officers Hawkins and Gozdecki were in the academy and were
doing well. He indicated that an officer out on leave had returned to full duty.
Chief Sashko indicated that FF/PM Brown will be retiring after 25 years of service. A walk
out will be held on Thursday October 11 at 8 am at Dept#25 on Dundee Rd. FF/PM
Simmons will be attending the Fire Academy. It is the first time for the department to
send a PM to the academy. Chief Sashko mentioned that the Board could watch a
training session at Station 4 in Arlington Heights. Please call Deputy Fire Chief Pearson
to make an appointment. An escort is required. Chief Sashko thanked the
Commissioners for all the relationships through the years.
OLD BUSINESS:
The FF/PM testing schedule will be available at the next meeting.
NEW BUSINESS:
There was no new business to discuss.
ADJOURNMENT OF OPEN SESSION:
Motion was made my Commissioner Dibbern and seconded by Commissioner Karge to adjourn
the open session and move to Executive Session at 7:46 p.m. for the purpose of discussing
personnel. All Commissioners present voted in favor of the motion.
EXECUTIVE SESSION:
The executive session was called to order at 7:47 p.m. Present were Chairman Viehman,
Commissioners Karge, Lukatsky, Dibbern and HR Director Art Malinowski. At 7:55 p.m. a
motion was made by Commissioner Dibbern and seconded by Commissioner Karge to adjourn
the executive session. All Commissioners present voted in favor of the motion.
RETURN TO OPEN SESSION:
The open session resumed at 7:55 p.m.
ADJOURNMENT:
A motion was made at 7:55 p.m. by Commissioner Dibbern, seconded by Commissioner Karge
to adjourn the meeting. All Commissioners present voted in favor of the motion and the meeting
was adjourned.
