Minutes of Regular Meeting August 5, 2008
CALL TO ORDER and ROLL CALL:
The meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by Chairman Viehman in the Chief's Conference
Room of the Village of Buffalo Grove Police Department. Commissioner Dibbern called the roll
and noted for the record that a quorum was present at the meeting. Present were Chairman
Viehman, Commissioners Karge, Loeb, Lukatsky, and Dibbern. Also in attendance were Fire
Chief Terry Vavra, Deputy Fire Chief Dan Pearson, Deputy Police Chief Jamie Dunne, and HR
Director Mr. Art Malinowski
APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
Commissioner Karge made a motion to approve the minutes of the BFPC Regular Meeting of
July 1, 2008, seconded by Commissioner Loeb. The motion was approved by a voice vote.
CHAIRMAN'S REPORT:
A. Chairman Viehman reported that former BFPC Chairman Greg Jackson has been
appointed Village Manager of Highwood.
B. Chairman received notification from Chief Balinski and Deputy Chief Dunne that Officer
Schlenker was exceeding expectations at the Police Academy and she is scheduled to
graduate August 15, 2008.
COMMISSIONER'S REPORTS:
Commissioners had no news to report.
CHIEF REPORTS:
A. Deputy Chief Dunne reported that Officer Sizer has retired and a luncheon will be held in
his honor on Wednesday August 13 at 11:30 at Grove Banquets.
B. Deputy Chief Dunne reported that the department was at full strength.
C. Chief Vavra reported that Battalion Chief Tierney has announced his retirement effective
January 19, 2009 after 33 years of outstanding service. This will lead to a promotion on
or after January 19 to Battalion Chief, a promotion to Lieutenant and a new hire.
D. Chief Vavra reported that 4 FF/PM have been sent to investigation school so they will be
able to do background investigations on candidates.
E. Chief Vavra informed the Commissioners that the Battalion Chief process has been
completed and the preliminary list has been posted. Four candidates participated in the
process.
OLD BUSINESS:
A. Chairman Viehman noted that the FF/PM testing process was complete. He thanked Mr.
Malinowski for his efforts in notifying candidates and coordinating preference points.
B. Oral interviews for the Police Sergeant testing will be changed to November 1 and 2,
2008.
C. Chairman Viehman handed out the final draft of the R/R for review and asked the
Commissioners and Chief Vavra, DPC Dunne and Mr. Malinowski to call or email him
with any changes or comments.
NEW BUSINESS:
There was no new business to discuss.
ADJOURNMENT:
A motion was made at 8:13 p.m. by Commissioner Lukatsky, seconded by Commissioner
Dibbern to adjourn the meeting. The meeting was adjourned.
