Minutes of Regular Meeting September 2, 2008
CALL TO ORDER and ROLL CALL:
The meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by Chairman Viehman in the Chief's Conference
Room of the Village of Buffalo Grove Police Department. Commissioner Dibbern called the roll
and noted for the record that a quorum was present at the meeting. Present were Chairman
Viehman, Commissioners Karge, Loeb, Lukatsky, and Dibbern. Also in attendance were Fire
Chief Terry Vavra, Deputy Fire Chief Dan Pearson, and Police Chief Steve Balinski.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
Commissioner Loeb made a motion to approve the minutes of the BFPC Regular Meeting of
August 5, 2008, seconded by Commissioner Lukatsky. The motion was approved by a voice
vote.
CHAIRMAN'S REPORT:
A. Chairman Viehman reported that on August 15, 2008, Commissioners Lukatsky, Karge
and Viehman attended the graduation of Officer Schlenker. The graduation was held in
Palatine. Officer Schlenker is now on the streets.
B. Chairman Viehman acknowledged on behalf of the Board appreciation to the Police and
Fire Departments for their presence at BG Days.
COMMISSIONER'S REPORTS:
A. Commissioner Loeb reported that the CERT team had a full roster and was able to assist
during the entire BG Days events. He volunteered during this time and felt it was a great
experience.
B. Commissioner Dibbern thanked the Police and Fire Departments for their assistance
during the BG Stampede.
CHIEF REPORTS:
FIRE DEPARTMENT
A. Chief Vavra reported that the Battalion Chief List has been posted. He was able
to learn from this process both the strengths and weaknesses of each candidate
which will aid him in the development of others.
B. Two members will be going on medical leave for hip surgery and will be out for
6-8 weeks.
C. FF/PM Tom Wisniewski will be celebrating 35 years with the Fire Department at
the end of August.
D. The FD has started the background checks on potential new hires.
E. FF/PM Jeff Morris will be deployed to LA through the MABAS program for 10-
14 days beginning September 3.
F. Chief Vavra complemented the CERT team for their participation at BG Days.
POLICE DEPARTMENT
A. Chief Balinski reported that Tony Gallagher though his NIPAS work is on
standby to go to LA.
B. He thanked the Commissioners for attending the graduation ceremony of Officer
Schlenker.
C. He reported an officer will be out due to knee surgery.
D. Chief Balinski reported that Bob Heer has been working for the Police
Department for 30 years.
E. Chief Balinski noted that there will be two Sgt. Special openings resulting in
career moves for the Sergeants.
F. As of this meeting, 18 applicants have applied for the Sergeant Exam process.
OLD BUSINESS:
A. Chairman Viehman noted that indeed there are potentially 18 applicants for the Sergeant
Exam. MEAS is preparing the test materials. Testing will be held on October 18 at 8:30
a.m. in the Training Room at the Police Station.
B. Chairman Viehman submitted the Rules and Regulations to the Village Attorney for
comment and hopes to have them published by October.
NEW BUSINESS:
A. Chairman Viehman brought to the attention of Board that IFPCA Fall 2008 Seminar will
be held October 31, November 1 and 2 in Schaumburg.
ADJOURNMENT:
A motion was made at 7:52 p.m. by Commissioner Lukatsky, seconded by Commissioner
Dibbern to adjourn the meeting. The meeting was adjourned.
