Minutes of Regular Meeting February 2, 2010
CALL TO ORDER and ROLL CALL:
The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by Chairman Viehman in the Chiefs
Conference Room of the Village of Buffalo Grove Police Department. Commissioner
Dibbern called the roll and noted for the record that a quorum was present at the
meeting. Present were Chairman Viehman, Commissioners Karge, Loeb, and
Dibbern. Not present was Commissioner Lukatsky. Also in attendance were Fire
Chief Terry Vavra, Deputy Police Chief Ed Wagner, HR Director Art Malinowski
and Trustee Liaison Steve Trilling.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
Commissioner Loeb made a motion to approve the minutes of the BFPO Regular
Meeting of January 5, 2009, seconded by Commissioner Karge. The motion was
approved by a voice vote.
CHAIRMAN'S REPORT:
A. Chairman Viehman reminded the Commissioners that the Police Survey
of Citizens' Attitudes and Opinions is being conducted and encouraged
friends and neighbors to get involved. You can participate by going to
www.vbg.org/PoliceSurvey.
B. Chairman Viehman also reminded the Commissioners of the Food Drive
to help local families is still ongoing. It is a jointly sponsored by The
Connie Sizer Foundation and the Buffalo Grove Police Department.
COMMISSIONER'S REPORTS:
Commissioners had no news to report.
CHIEF REPORTS:
POLICE DEPARTMENT
A. Deputy Chief Wagner reported that Cpl. Rodriquez has begun his
supervisory roll at the Academy. He also noted that Officer Brian
Hansen has been chosen as President of his Academy Class. His
graduation is scheduled for March 26, 2010.
B. Deputy Chief Wagner noted that Officer Verduzco is now in
LCMEG replacing Officer Martin.
C. On February 3, 2010, ABCD Awards were given to Sgt. Bethge,
Officer Montiel and Officer Wiggins.
D. Deputy Chief Wagner reported three officers were out for injuries,
one officer was on light duty and one officer has been assigned to
staff.
E. C. Johansen will become C.S.O. effective February 1, 2010.
FIRE DEPARTMENT
A. Chief Vavra reported that one FF/PM is on light duty as a result of
knee surgery.
B. The Chief reported that the ABCD Awards will be presented to
FF/PM Steve Rusin (Pink Heals) and FF/PM Kent Breck (Citizen
Assistance) on February 3, 2010
C. Chief Vavra reported that 10 Sleep Number Beds have been
purchased for the stations. The Foreign Fire Tax will be paying for
part of the beds. The Foreign Fire Tax is a credit paid as a result of
using an out of state insurance company. The Department receives
$20k-$30k annually from this tax. Past examples of purchases
included a split thermal imaging camera, leather boots and
hydrogen cyanide detectors.
OLD BUSINESS:
A. A copy of the FF/PM ad was reviewed. It will appear in newspapers
February 7 and February 14, 2010.
B. The written test will be a generic test from IPMA.
NEW BUSINESS:
A. Mr. Malinowski reported that the Reception to Honor Our Community
Volunteers will be held on Sunday February, 28, 2010 at 1:30 pm at The
Arboretum Club. Congratulations to Commissioners Viehman and Loeb
for five years of service as Commissioners.
B. Trustee Trilling reviewed with the Commissioners the State Officials and
Employee Ethics Act of the Village of Buffalo Grove and the Code of
Ethical Behavior and Conduct for Village Elected and Appointed Officials
for the Village of Buffalo Grove. Both acts set forth principals and
examples of proper behavior and conduct and on how officials should
conduct themselves in private and public situations.
ADJOURNMENT:
There being no further business to come before the Board, the meeting was
adjourned by the Chair at 8:04 p.m.
