CALL TO ORDER and ROLL CALL:
The meeting was called to order at 7:04 p.m. by Chairman Viehman in the Chief s
Conference Room of the Village of Buffalo Grove Police Department. Commissioner
Dibbern called the roll and noted for the record that a quorum was present at the
meeting. Present were Chairman Viehman, Commissioners Karge, Loeb, Lukatsky
and Dibbern. Also in attendance were Fire Chief Terry Vavra, Deputy Police Chief
Ed Wagner and HR Director Art Malinowski.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
Commissioner Karge made a motion to approve the minutes of the BFPC Regular
Meeting of June 1, 2010, seconded by Commissioner Lukatsky. The motion was
approved by a voice vote.
CHAIRMAN'S REPORT:
Chairman Viehman reported that on July 12 Dane Bragg will be appointed the new
village manager.
COMMISSIONER'S REPORTS:
Commissioner Dibbern attended the Flag Day Ceremony and reported that the Fire
Department Honor Guard did a great job in presenting the American Flag.
CHIEF REPORTS:
POLICE DEPARTMENT
A. Deputy Chief Wagner reported that The National Law
Enforcement Challenge results have been posted. This year the
Buffalo Grove Police Department won two awards at the National
level. Buffalo Grove won first place in the 46-75 sworn officer
category and also won a special recognition for our
Bicycle/Pedestrian safety program. This makes a total of five state
and national traffic safety awards won by the Buffalo Grove Police
Department for 2009/2010.
B. Deputy Chief Wagner reported that two officers are out due to
illness.
FIRE DEPARTMENT
A. Chief Vavra reported that two FF/PM are off due to recent
surgeries.
OLD BUSINESS:
A. Chairman Viehman reviewed with the commissioners the results of the
FF/PM oral interview process. The Preliminary list consists of 37
candidates. There were 6 no shows and 9 failed the interview. All
candidates received letters indicating their status as a result of the
interview. Candidates appearing on the Preliminary Eligible List may
submit proof of eligibility for preference points by 4:30 p.m. on July 15,
2010.
B. Chairman Viehman thanked the fire department for their technical
support and believed that these observations would assist the
investigators in their background work.
C. Chairman Viehman noted that one or two candidates in the top ten may
be called but may not qualify since they are not a paramedic yet. He
noted that a number of candidates seemed to want a career change but
they have not really done much to assist in the change.
D. Chairman Viehman noted that if we exhaust the eligibility list within the
two years we will call the next 10-15 candidates that passed the written
test and set up the oral interview process.
E. Chairmen Viehman indicated that we need to conduct a special meeting to
approve the final eligibility list. The special meeting will be held at 7:30
p.m. on Tuesday, July 20.
NEW BUSINESS:
There was no new business to report.
ADJOURNMENT:
There being no further business to come before the Board, the meeting was
adjourned by the Chair at 7:31 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Jane L. Dibbern, Secretary
Board of Fire and Police Commissioners
