Board of Fire and Police Commissioners
Minutes of Regular Meeting October 5, 2010
CALL TO ORDER and ROLL CALL:
The meeting was called to order at 7:04 p.m. by Chairman Viehman in the Chiefs
Conference Room of the Village of Buffalo Grove Police Department. Commissioner
Dibbern called the roll and noted for the record that a quorum was present at the
meeting. Present were Chairman Viehman, Commissioners Karge, Loeb, Lukatsky
and Dibbern. Also in attendance were Police Chief Steve Balinski, Fire Chief Terry
Vavra, HR Director Art Malinowski, and Trustee Liaison Steve Trilling.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
Commissioner Lukatsky made a motion to approve the minutes of the BFPO
Regular Meeting of September 7, 2010, seconded by Commissioner Karge. The
motion was approved by a voice vote
CHAIRMAN'S REPORT:
A. Chairman Viehman noted that on Monday October 18 at 6:00 p.m. at the
Village Hall Chamber there will be a community welcome event for Village
Manager Dane Bragg. Please R.S.V.P. to Elaine Ward or phone her at
847-459-2518.
B. Chairman Viehman offered congratulations to the Fire Department for a very
successful Open House on September 25. He also offered congratulations to
FF/PM Joe Alexander for being named Firefighter of the Year.
COMMISSIONER'S REPORTS:
The Commissioners present had no new news to report.
CHIEF REPORTS:
FIRE DEPARTMENT
A. Chief Vavra noted that the Open House was very well attended and
appreciated the Board members who were able to attend the event.
B. Chief Vavra announced that FF/PM Joe Alexander has been named
Firefighter of the Year. He is the department's third recipient. He
noted that they will schedule a formal award ceremony at a later
date.
C. The Department is all full force.
D. Chief Vavra reported that he has met with the new Village
Manager, Dane Bragg, and he had a very positive meeting.
POLICE DEPARTMENT
A. Chief Balinski reported that Officer Bock had a very healthy baby
girl. Both are doing very well.
B. He reported that one officer is on extended light duty and one
officer has reported back to light duty.
C. Chief Balinski announced that on November 1, 2010, Commander
Mark Bucalo will be retiring and will be accepting a position in the
Village of Schaumberg as a CALEA and Technical Specialist. Chief
Balinski will be in discussion with the Village Manager, Dane
Bragg, to review options with regards to filling the position.
D. Chief Balinski noted that on October 10, 2010, the Connie Sizer
Foundation will be hosting Connie's Run for Hope at Busse
Woods in Elk Grove Village. The event includes a 5K Run / Walk
and 1 Mile Fun Run for Kids. Raffle tickets will be sold.
The Connie Sizer Foundation was created by Buffalo Grove Police
Officers in memory of the wife of Officer Bob Sizer, in memory of
her courageous fight against cancer.
OLD BUSINESS:
A. Chairman Viehman reported that the presentation from the Fire Department
last month has been reviewed by Mr. Malinowski and he made some
recommendations. Chairman Viehman has asked Mr. Malinowski and Chief
Vavra to review the recommendations and finalize the FF/PM Candidate
Background Check process.
NEW BUSINESS:
A. Chairman Viehman presented a draft of the 2011 Entry Police Officer
Testing Cycle schedule and the 2011 Police Department Sergeant
Promotional Examination Process schedule for the Board to review.
Chairman Viehman asked the Board to review the schedules and to let him
know if you have are any conflicting dates.
ADJOURNMENT:
There being no further business to come before the Board, the meeting was
adjourned by the Chair at 7:33 p.m.
