Commissioner Dibbern called the roll and noted for the record that a quorum was present at the meeting. Present were Chairman Viehman, Commissioners Karge, Loeb, Lukatsky and Dibbern. Also in attendance were Fire Chief Vavra, Police Commander Szos, HR Director Art Malinowski, and Village Liaison Trustee Trilling. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: A. Commissioner Lukatsky made a motion to approve the minutes of the BFPC Rescheduled Regular Meeting of June 12, 2012, as amended, seconded by Commissioner Karge. Commissioners Karge, Loeb, Lukatsky, Dibbern and Viehman voted in favor of the motion. The motion passed. CHAIRMAN'S REPORT: Chairman Viehman had no new news to report. COMMISSIONER'S REPORTS: Commissioner Loeb noted his sincere thanks and admiration for the officers of the Buffalo Grove Fire and Police Departments in their handling of the brush fire that occurred on July 8th. He was out of town when the fire occurred and lives close to this area. He was very relieved to learn that there were no injuries and no major property damage thanks to the great work of all involved. He also thanked the off duty Morton Grove Police Officer who saw four people running from the scene and the officer was able to detain them until Buffalo Grove officers arrived. The officer has recently graduated from the police academy. Many homes were in jeopardy with flames rising some 30' and came within 15' of the homes. Chief Vavra noted the dangers fireworks and that it proves we are in a severe drought. Chief Vavra reported that 25 departments assisted in this fast moving fire which involved 10 acres of dry land. Chief Vavra thanked Battalion Chief Collins, Police Sgt. Kristiansen as well as members of public works. Commonwealth Edison was able to restore all power by Sunday evening but the blaze caused about$150,000 in damages to the poles and wires. CHIEF AND TRUSTEE REPORTS POLICE DEPARTMENT A. Commander Szos reported the 3 new recruits started the academy on July 9th. B. Commander Szos reported 2 officers have returned to full duty and 3 officers are on Iight duty. C. Commander Szos noted that two background checks are in process for hiring a CSO. FIRE DEPARTMENT A. Chief Vavra reported there were 2 recent fires, the brush fire noted earlier and a small house fire. B. Chief Vavra reported one FF/PM is off due to knee surgery. C. Chief Vavra noted that on August 71h at 5 p.m. the department will be participating in National Night Out and on September 22th the department will be holding an open house. D. Chief Vavra indicated that 3 FF/PM background work is almost complete. TRUSTEE REPORT A. Trustee Trilling noted that the Countryside paper had a great pictures and a good article on the brush fire. QUESTIONS FROM THE AUDIENCE: There were no questions from the audience. OLD BUSINESS: A. Chairman Viehman reported that Firefighter oral interviews were held on Saturday, July 7, 2012, in the Chief s Conference Room at the Police Department. The first 13 candidates were contacted. One candidate was not available due to military training. One candidate asked for a change of venue and then cancelled. Eleven candidates were interviewed. Ten candidates passed and one candidate failed. Commissioner Loeb noted that the process was new and different but worked very well. He noted that all the candidates were very articulate and there was unanimous voting on the part of the Board. B. Chairman Viehman presented notes from the Fire Lt. feedback session and asked that these notes be added to the minutes of this meeting. NEW BUSINESS: A. A motion was made by Commissioner Loeb, seconded by Commissioner Karge, to approve the FF/PM Candidate Oral Interview Scores dated July 7, 2012. Commissioners Karge, Loeb, Lukatsky, Dibbern and Viehman voted in favor of the motion. The motion passed. Letters will be sent to the candidates on July 11, 2012. B. Chairman Viehman asked Chief Vavra for an update on open firefighter/paramedic positions. Chief Vavra reported that there are currently three open positions. Additionally, by the end of the year there will be three more open positions. He also anticipates a Sr. level staff position will be vacant but it will not be filled. C. Commander Szos reported that two candidates are under investigation for one open position. ADJOURNMENT: A motion was made by Commissioner Lukatsky to adjourn the meeting at 7:35 p.m., seconded by Commissioner Loeb. The motion was approved by voice vote Respectfully submitted, Jane L.
