Board of Fire and Police Commissioners
Minutes of Regular Meeting October 2, 2012
CALL TO ORDER and ROLL CALL:
The meeting was called to order at 7:01 p.m. by Chairman Viehman in the Chief s Conference
Room of the Village of Buffalo Grove Police Department. Commissioner Dibbern called the roll
and noted for the record that a quorum was present at the meeting. Present were Chairman
Viehman, Commissioners Karge, Loeb, Lukatsky and Dibbern. Also in attendance were Fire
Chief Vavra, Police Commander Szos, HR Director Malinowski, and Village Liaison Trustee
Trilling.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
A. Commissioner Lukatsky made a motion to approve the minutes of the BFPC Regular
Meeting of September 4, 2012, seconded by Commissioner Karge. Commissioners
Karge, Loeb, Lukatsky, Dibbern and Viehman voted in favor of the motion. The motion
passed.
CHAIRMAN'S REPORT:
A. Chairman Viehman made the commissioners aware that the Board had been subpoenaed
in the Tom Goff disability/retirement case. He noted that this is a matter of formality.
B. Chairman Viehman noted that the three new firefighters, Caballero, Carroll and
Wehrheim are on duty shifts.
C. Chairman Viehman reported that the three new police officers, Valstyn, Greenwood, and
Parker have graduated from the academy. They will begin their FTO work. Officer
Valstyn was rated number 1 academically in the class of 64 officers.
D. Officer Adams has started the academy.
E. Congratulations to Glen Bird for being named Firefighter of the Year. The award was
presented to him by the Rotary Club of Buffalo Grove at the Village Board Meeting
October 1, 2012.
COMMISSIONER'S REPORTS:
The Commissioners present had no new news to report.
CHIEF AND TRUSTEE REPORTS
POLICE DEPARTMENT
A. Commander Szos noted three recent retirements: Christy Bourbonnais, Deb
Chrobak and Tim McGinn.
B. Commander Szos reported that Officer Carlson has been released from field
training.

C. Commander Szos noted that one officer is on light duty and one officer is off
on medical leave.
FIRE DEPARTMENT
A. Chief Vavra noted that the open house went very well and was very well
attended.
B. Chief Vavra reported that Glen Bird received the Firefighter of the Year
Award. He thanked Chairman Viehman and the Rotary for establishing this
award some five years ago.
TRUSTEE REPORT
A. Trustee Trilling congratulated the remarriage of the Loeb's and thanked Chief
Vavra on his creative writing and ceremony. Commissioner Loeb thanked
Chief Vavra from the bottom of his heart for the wonderful ceremony,
surprise poem, and fellowship at the firehouse. It was beyond anything he and
his wife and family have ever experienced. Commissioner Loeb remarked
that it was better than the wedding 26 years ago as his produced family, Joint
Commission family and friends were able to attend.
QUESTIONS FROM THE AUDIENCE:
There were no questions from the audience.
OLD BUSINESS:
A. Chairman Viehman will send out an updated status eligibility list before the next meeting.
NEW BUSINESS:
A. The Commission has been asked by Village Manager Dane Bragg to suspend any action
on conditional offers to police and firefighter candidates until November. Chairman
Viehman asked the Commissioners to keep the poly information in their possession for
future review.
B. Chief Vavra formally asked that FF/PM's Steen, Potesta, and Beckman be removed from
probationary status and moved to full membership with the Buffalo Grove Fire
Department.
A motion was so entertained by the Chair, and a motion was made by Commissioner
Loeb, seconded by Commissioner Dibbern, to approve the termination of the
probationary status for FF/PM's Steen, Potesta and Beckman. Commissioners Karge,
Loeb, Lukatsky, Dibbern and Viehman voted in favor of the motion. The motion passed.
ADJOURNMENT:
A motion was made by Commissioner Lukatsky to adjourn the meeting at 7:13 p.m., seconded
by Commissioner Karge. The motion was approved by voice vote
