Chairman Kahen will talk to Scott at the Park District about the prospects for power assist doors at their facilities. Chairman Kahen noted that we have received no new talent bank applications since 10/00 and asked staff to arrange for some promotion of application to the committee via channel 6 and newsletter, as well as seeing if the local newspapers will run something on it. Chairman Kahen noted that we have received two responses thus far to the proposal for a support group for parents with disabilities since the article ran in the Winter 2002 Village News. Chairman Kahen directed that the CRD would be taking a more work-directed approach in the year ahead, with tasks tied to goals and sub-committees consisting of Commission members to work on each goal apart from these meetings and use these meetings instead to report and gain feedback on their progress from the whole. Chairman Kahen noted that the topic of disabilities was incorporated into the Village recently published goals for the year 2002. Specifically, Goal #7 reads: Community Enrichment-Promote emerging quality of life programs and cultural activities to enhance community spirit and involvement. Focus on opportunities to improve the overall aesthetic appeal of the Village; to conduct an Arts Festival in 2002; and to begin community band concerts. Foster efforts of newer commissions pertaining to youth, the arts, and civic involvement to meet the needs of our community. Improve our commitment to training and development for all Village commissions. Explore further support for persons with disabilities and our senior citizens, particularly through existing commissions. Expand community awareness and support for worthy philanthropic efforts, such as cancer education and the Relay for Life. Continue to explore opportunities for meaningful inter-governmental cooperation to serve the community. The complete set of goals is published to the Village's web site at www.vbg.org. IV. New Business The Commission reviewed the draft goals document submitted last month by Commissioner Slaw, entitled "Strategic Goals: 2002," assigning themselves to smaller subcommittees responsible for carrying forward and reporting monthly on each goal. Liaison Versten will finalize the document. V. Old Business - - Commissioner Spallone reported on the status of interest in the formation of a support group for parents with disabilities. There have been two responses to date and she is awaiting a call back from Ms. Waxman. She contacted both Wheeling and Vernon Townships, and both of her contacts are discussing the notion with their respective groups. She has also called into the Center for Independent Living in both Vernon Hills and Elgin. Chairman Kahen recommended she call David Robb at the Village of Arlington Heights. - Commissioner Spallone passed around the Adaptive Parenting Handbook, published by Through the Looking Glass. She passed around some materials from their annual conference as well. - Chairman Kahen reported that Marty Sussman, who had come to the Commission at a previous meeting expressing concerns about the handicapped parking provisions at the Highland Park Hospital, had received a response from HPH's Rick Banes in regard to his letter.
