MINUTES OF THE BUFFALO GROVE COMMISSION
FOR RESIDENTS WITH DISABILITIES SPECIAL MEETING
MARCH 20, 2002
I. Call to Order—The meeting was called to order at 7:05 p.m.
II. Roll Call — Commissioners present included Chairman Kahen, Commissioners Verson,
Chorney, Gottlieb, Holm, Weiner, and Sussman. Also present was staff liaison Versten.
In addition, Susan Levitt was in attendance. Susan is a new applicant to the Commission,
and a recent college graduate who has worked with the Center for Independent Living.
III. Approval of Minutes—A motion to approve the minutes of the 2/27 meeting was made
by Comm. Holm and seconded by Comm. Sussman. Motion Carried.
IV. Chairman's Report — Chairman Kahen updated the Commission on his concerns
expressed to Ed Schar about the number of handicapped spaces at the new Dominick's.
Ed's response assured that the spaces were dispersed throughout the parking lot per code.
The Committee will draft a letter to shopping center management asking them to go
beyond code. Rick explained that code requires 2% of spaces to be dedicated to
handicapped parking when the lot exceeds 200 spaces total. This is another area where
the Business Community Awareness Subcommittee will consider ways to get developers
and property managers to go beyond code.
Chairman Kahen reported on his request of Police Chief Leo McCann as to whether the
officers have cards to use with person having hearing impairments. Chief McCann will
respond soon.
Goal tracking — vertical grid. It was suggested that this would be a good way to track
progress on Commission goals. Phil will review what Sarah used to do.
Pagers — Rick will contact police regarding the feasibility of their role in paging during
emergencies, ala Arlington Heights.
Use of Public Meeting Rooms - some discussion followed on use of public meeting
facilities and what was appropriate. Phil reported that he is awaiting an opinion from the
Village Attorney on this subject.
Chairman Kahen noted that the supplier who donated the water bottles for Fun and Food
during BG Days is willing to supply another 300 for the 2002 program.
The $350 the Buffalo Grove FOP gave the Commission last year is to be used during
2002 BG Days Fun and Food, possibly for plastic visors, flashlights, etc. and should
include the FOP logo. Commissioner Weiner will get priced from ad vendors.
Chairman Kahen reminded the Commission that they will have a presence at the Senior
Expo on 4/23. Phil will update the Commission brochure for and buy some candy for
distribution.
V. Commissioner Reports
Commissioner Holm shared her submittal for an upcoming Village Newsletter with the
Commission.
Commissioner Spallone has a 4/18 support scheduled for 4 people concerning parents
with disabilities.
It was reported that Pace is interviewing people who apply f6r4 door to door service and
evaluating need on an individual basis versus the intent of the service. Commissioner
Chorney questioned whether the practice was being done to "throw people off' certain
routes in order to create low ridership data which would substantiate decisions already
made in regard to route changes.
Commissioner Weiner would like to offer the public a workshop on Overall Planning for
Families with Special Needs. Discussion followed on possible dates and how to go about
securing a presenter.
Commissioner Verson suggested the Commission participate in the BG days parade.
Commissioner Sussman reported on an upcoming event—Habitat—April 22, 23, and 24.
Commissioner Verson noted that a 4/17 meeting was planned at the Vernon Library
concerning IEP's and 504's.

Weiner. Meeting adjourned at 9:45 P.M.
