2002-06-26 - Commission for Residents with Disabilities - Minutes Board orCommission: ❑ commission on Residents With Disabilities Document Type: 0 A e g nda 0 Minutes Meeting ate: 06/26/2002 Type of Meeting: ❑ Special Meeting MINUTES OF THE SPECIAL MEETINGOF THE BUFFALO GROVE COMMISSION FOR RESIDENTS WITH DISABILITIES MEETING JUNE 26, 2002 I. Call to Order—The meeting was called to order at 7:45 p.m. at the Village Grill restaurant at 48 Raupp Blvd., following a 6:30 PM dinner gathering in recognition of the tenth anniversary of the Commission for Residents With Disabilities. IL Roll Call— Comms. present included Chairman Kahen, Comms. Chorney, Gottlieb, Holm, Slaw, Sussman, Verson, and Weiner. Also present was Staff Liaison Versten. III. Approval of Minutes— the minutes from the 5/22/02 and 6/26/02 meetings will be submitted for approval at the July 24 meeting. Chairman's Report — Chairman Kahen provided an update on the disabilities — related items of the upcoming BG Invitational Arts Festival of Saturday July 27 and Sunday July 28. Chairman Kahen noted that planners of the event seem cognizant of required aisle access room and other disabilities related issues. Thirty-two to thirty-six handicapped parking spots are available. Two accessible porta-potties will be on site. The preview for persons with disabilities will begin at 9 AM on Saturday. The two golf carts arranged through Carmen Molinaro will need to be there by 8:30 AM. Comm. Gottlieb provided laminated signs for the shuttles containing the handicapped logo and the words "Courtesy Shuttle." A Village booth will be set up on site for public information and as a general base for event workers. Commissioner Sussman volunteered to help out at the booth. Chairman Kahen will check into the availability of walkie-talkies for communications with the shuttle driver. A meeting of Arts festival volunteers is scheduled for 7/10. Chairman Kahen next provided an update o Buffalo Grove Days. Cravings will provide 400 hot dogs, but no one has donated chips yet. Debbie Verson reported that the letters soliciting candy donations were mailed. Tom Jacobs Advertising Agency is supplying baseball caps and 300 water bottles. Hats and goody bags will be given away at check-in for Fun and Food. Comm. Weiner noted that we want to be sure to remember to take advantage of the check-in process as a way to gather address and mailing data. Chairman Kahen noted that he wanted to use the next meeting to 1) clean up the storage cage in the basement of Village Hall and 2)put the goody bags together. V. Commissioners Reports — Comm. Chorney noted that her new e-mail address is dmsmc@earthlink.net. VI. Sub-Committee Reports A. Business Community Awareness Sub-Committee— Comm. Verson stated that Target will provide a personal shopper to persons with disabilities upon request, but was not promoting the service with signage, etc. She reported that the Sub-Committee's efforts are ongoing in regard to establishing some form of standardization within the business community of such services. B. Community Service and Accessibility Sub-Committee—No report. C. Public Awareness Sub-Committee— Comm. Holm distributed the attached memo summarizing recent discussions and suggestions from the Sub-Committee. D. Schools Sub-Committee—No report. E. Advocacy/Legislative Sub-Committee— Comm. Slaw indicated he is still interested in submitting two or three questions to the gubernatorial candidates and seeking written responses that could be published. He encouraged the other Commissioners to provide questions that he could then consolidate. Commissioners will forward their suggested questions to Staff liaison Versten who will then relay all submittals to Comm. Slaw for consolidation. Comm. Slaw will then send these to the candidates asking for replies, which would then be posted to the Village's web site. We will also forward the questions to President Hartstein to consider posing to candidates on his People, Places and Issues candidates' forums. Comm. Slaw encouraged all other commissioners to bring these questions, when finalized, to any candidates' forums they may be attending or coordinating so that we can be sure to get them aired.
