MINUTES OF THE BUFFALO GROVE COMMISSION
FOR RESIDENTS WITH DISABILITIES MEETING
JULY 24, 2002
L Call to Order—The meeting was called to order at 6:30 p.m.
IL Roll Call— Commissioners present included Chairman Kahen, Commissioners Chorney,
Holm, Sussman, Spallone, Verson, and Weiner. Also present were Staff Liaison Summers and
Fire Department Liaison Swieca.
III. Approval of Minutes— It was noted that the Commission will approve the minutes of
the 5/22 meeting at next month's meeting because the item did not appear on the agenda for
this meeting. A motion to approve the minutes of the 6/26 meeting was made by Comm.
Sussman and seconded by Comm. Holm, subject to the addition of the missing attachment
referenced in the minutes. Motion Carried.
IV. Chairman's Report— Chairman Kahen reported that the Buffalo Grove Fine Art
Invitational Festival was this weekend and that a temporary office would be setup in unit 132 of
the Town Center. Volunteers should check in at this office which will also house restroom
facilities and snacks/drinks for the volunteers. Chairman Kahen also reviewed the cart shuttle
operation and schedule of drivers for the festival.
Chairman Kahen indicated that the power assist doors, now included in the C.I.P. would
be delayed temporarily do to other security adjustments that need to be made that may
affect the exact equipment needed for the power assist doors.
Chairman Kahen reminded the Commissioners that the Buffalo Grove Days Stampede
would be the morning of Sunday, September 1 and asked if anyone was interested in
participating in the event. Comm. Holm and Sussman volunteered to participate.
Chairman Kahen informed the Commission that it was time to schedule shifts for the
courtesy shuttle runs at Buffalo Grove Days. He read the times drivers were needed
and asked that Commissioners email him with their available times (Chairman Kahen
subsequently emailed the Commission with a summary of the times they needed to
cover .
V. Commissioners Reports— Comm. Verson reported that she had confirmed arrangements
with some members of the RIC Express Wheelchair Basketball Team to perform an exhibition
performance at Buffalo Grove Days. They will also bring five extra chairs to have an
exhibition game against Village Trustees/Staff/Police/Fire. The exhibition game will be
Monday, September 2 from noon to 1:OOpm. The Commission will need to arrange for two
portable baskets to be on site. Suggestions for locations to get the baskets included Public
Works, the Park District,local stores, and individuals that have them at their homes. The
Commission asked that Staff Liaison Phil Versten publicize the event on Channel 6 and through
other appropriate means.
Comm. Spallone distributed a copy of her self-published book "Write Me Up — A
Written Expression Program For Students With Special Needs."
VI. Sub-Committee Reports—None.
VIL Items for Discussion—None.
VIIL Staff Liaison Report— Fire Department Deputy Chief Swieca introduced himself to the
Commission and explained that the Fire Department was now reaching out to various
commissions and that he would be the Fire Department Liaison to the Commission for
Residents with Disabilities. Chairman Kahen welcomed him to the Commission.

X. Other Business—None.
XI Adjournment — Motion to adjourn made by Comm. Chorney and seconded by Comm.
Sussman. Meeting adjourned at 7:25 p.m. to the Village Hall storage cages for
Commissioners to work on Fun & Food Goody Bags.
