August 28, 2002
L Call to Order—The meeting was called to order at 7 PM.
II. Roll Call— Commissioners present included Chairman Kahen, Commissioners Chorney,
Gottlieb, Holm, and Weiner. Also present were Staff Liaison Versten and Fire Department
Liaison Swieca.
III. Approval of Minutes —Approval of the minutes of May 22 was postponed until the
September 25 meeting. Commissioner Holm motioned to approve the minutes of July 24,
seconded by Commissioner Chorney. Motion Carried.
IV. Chairman's Report — Chairman Kahen reported that Clearbrook was hosting a Casino
Night on September 7. Mr. Versten said he would put notice on cable channel 6.
Chairman Kahen reviewed the State of Illinois rankings in State spending on various
disabilities issues. The rankings were very near the bottom in almost all cases.
Chairman Kahen reviewed the Commission's participation in the July arts festival and
thanked Commissioners Sussman, Chorney and Holm who volunteered. He noted that
we may not need two carts for the festival next year, and that festival vendors need to
understand that the golf carts are not there for the purpose of running errands for them.
Chairman Kahen noted that we'll be addressing goals again next month and encouraged
Commissioners to come ready to discuss updates and progress.
In follow up to a question posed by Commissioner Weiner, Chairman Kahen noted there
have been no new applications to the Commission for membership and asked Mr.
Versten to recap what efforts had been made to recruit new members. Mr. Versten
reviewed the recent efforts at recruiting new commission members via cable channel 6,
subscriber e-mail, the web site, and the Village News. Mr. Versten noted that
volunteerism is down in general.
Mr. Kahen reported on Buffalo Grove Days updates:
• The Youth Commission will provide free cotton candy for Fun and Food.
• Commissioners volunteering at Commission sponsored programs during BG Days
should wear their red shirts with Commission name badges.
• It is important that we get addresses during registration at Fun and Food.
Commissioner Holm will consolidate addresses.
• Mr. Versten reported that there were 256 registrants thus far and that the final count is
likely to exceed 400, as in years past.
• Mr. Versten noted that Nara Sabath had called Village Hall to volunteer donations to
the goody bags for next year.
• During the day of Fun and Food, signs need to be posted prominently in the vicinity of
the event that say "'Fun and Food' is a special event for persons with disabilities and their
immediate families only."
• Parking passes were being distributed to courtesy shuttle drivers.
• Commissioner Gottlieb produced sponsorship signage for the carts. Mr. Versten will
place them on the carts.
• Four cases of water will be made available near Mobile Comm for emergency use.
• All Trustees plus Elliott will be on hand for the wheelchair basketball challenge. The
temporary court will be located between the food tent and the public service center. The park
district will deliver and set up two portable basketball systems at 11:30 AM.
V. Commissioners' Reports — Comm. Holm reported that the Buffalo Grove Park District
is hosting a Halloween family event.
Chairman Kahen explained that Commissioner Slaw has taken on major responsibilities
outside of the Commission and may not be able to continue with his leadership of the
Legislative Sub-Committee. Chairman Kahen invited Commissioners interested in
taking up the work of that Commission to contact him.
VI. Sub-Committee Reports — Commissioner Holm shared a draft of her Village News
submittal for the fall edition with the Commission and asked for comments. Comments were
provided and the submittal was made to Mr. Versten for the newsletter.
VII. Items for Discussion—None.
VIIL Staff Liaison Report— Fire Department Deputy Battalion Chief Swieca circulated a
catalog description of a mobility device that enables public safety personnel to transport
persons with mobility impairments to up and down stairways. The device will be purchased by
the association of a local apartment complex for use by the Buffalo Grove Fire Department. It
will be kept on premises at the apartment complex.
