Gottlieb, Holm, Sussman, Verson, Weiner, Dumrauf, Klassman, and Morton. Also present were

made by Comm. Verson and seconded by Comm. Morton. Motion Carried.
IV. Chairman's Report-
Per the nomination of the Commission for Residents with Disabilities, Sandy Thebault of
Astro Amusements will accept a Golden Bison Award at the March 17 meeting of the
Village Board of Trustees for Astro's commitment to the community as exhibited by their
contributions to the "Fun and Food" program.
Correspondence-general FYI - Steele Surgical Supply in Waukegan makes ramps, lifts,
etc. for vehicles, homes, offices & public spaces.
David Kuriniec has been invited to attend the 4/23/03 meeting and to speak. He is an
advocacy speaker on Disabilities rights. That meeting will be held in Council Chambers.
Chairman Kahen read a communication from staff liaison Battalion Chief Larry Swieca.
He has some thoughts regarding 1) ambulance lock-downs, 2) Debbie Verson's
proposed letter to the schools, and 3) the draft survey the commission wants to
reissue. He will present them at another time.
Marla Levy's (Le Jardin) - Chairman Kahen spoke with Postmaster Mike
Wingstrom and determined that special arrangements could be made for the
postal carrier to bring mail to her doorstep, since she cannot get her scooter over
the driveway curb to get to her common mail box. Ms. Levy must fill out the
proper forms. Commissioner Klassman suggested we promote this post office
service.
Chairman Kahen also spoke to Postmaster Wingstrom about provisions for
persons with disabilities for whom it is difficult or painful to wait in line. Trustee
Berman suggested a simple sign. Comm. Gottlieb will forward signs to Chairman
Kahen, who will bring them to the post office.
V. Commissioner's Reports -
Commissioner Gottlieb relayed the concerns of a Village resident who noted that
none of the Park District's displayed design alternatives for a playground at Bush
Grove Park did not seem to have realistic accessibility provisions (turn around
space, etc.). Mike Rylko had spoken to the resident and assured her that all
plans meet ADA, although the Park District would be looking at opportunities to
make the structure more accessible. Chairman Kahen indicated that he has
literature on accessible playgrounds from Boundless Playgrounds in Michigan.
Commissioner Verson has more such literature if anyone is interested.
Commissioner Klassman updated the group on the discussions on a possible
dedicated field for Buddy Baseball. Dale Ducommon at the Park District had
suggested a form of Astroturf over the poured-in-place options since the Astroturf
would provide better drainage, utility, durability, etc. Right now, they are
considering just an infield area for this. Dale is getting price comparisons.
Commissioner Morton inquired as to progress on lending closet. Staff liaison
Versten indicated that he had spoken with Ellen Vanderverter at Vernon
Taownship and that she had indicated that the Township administers a lending
closet for Vernon Township residents. It was suggested that we contact them
again to determine whether they would be willing to extend the service to ALL of
Buffalo Grove in exchange for inventory contributions from all of BG. Chairman
Kahen will call to inquire. He will also call Wheeling Township to verify the status
of their lending closet.
Commissioner Verson noted that she had talked to Sue Haddick of RCIC
Basketball and booked time for her to once again bring the team to BG Days for a
game.
Commissioner Dumrauf asked whether the CRD conducts outreach to seniors.
Staff liaison Versten recapped our involvement with the annual Senior Expo.
Chairman Kahen covered his speaking engagement to the Senior Club at the
Park District. Chairman Kahen will follow up with Park District Senior Coordinator
Terri Ebner.
VI. Liaison Reports -
Trustee liaison Berman Ghida or Amy Amdur will get back to Rick regarding
space for a disabled artist in the Buffalo Grove Invitational Art Festival, July 26 &
27. Chairman Kahen noted that we may have just one golf cart operating at the
art festival this year. Commissioner Klassman will talk to his fellow members of
the Buffalo Grove Area Chamber of Commerce to determine whether there would
be enough sponsorship interest to justify the renting of an extended cart.
Staff liaison Versten gave upcoming newsletter publication dates and noted that
an article about Buddy Baseball would be included in the Spring issue. He will
collect submittals for the summer issue in Mid-April.
VI I. Motion to Adjourn -
Motion made by Sussman. Seconded by Verson. Motion approved.
