Holm, Sussman, Verson, Weiner, Dumrauf, Klassman, and Morton. Also present were
staff liaison Summers and Village resident Martin Sussman.
III. Approval of Minutes-A motion to approve the minutes of the 2/26 meeting was
made by Comm. Sussman and seconded by Comm. Verson. During Discussion on the
motion Comm. Verson requested a correction to the minutes, indicating that at the time
of the February meeting she had spoken with the RIC Express but had not yet booked
the team for Buffalo Grove Days. Minutes approved as amended.
IV. Chairman's Report- Chairman Kahen asked if all members of the commission
had completed their self-evaluation forms. Two commissioners had not yet filled out their
forms and will complete them prior to the next meeting.
Chairman Kahen indicated the commissioner's reception is scheduled for Sunday
March 30 at the Arboretum Club.
The commission inquired if Chairman Kahen had sent a thank you letter to former
Comm. Spallone following her resignation. Chairman Kahen indicated he had not
yet done so and that he would contact staff liaison Versten to request that a letter
be drafted on commission letterhead.
Chairman Kahen noted that the Village resident on Le Jardin Court who had been
seeking assistance with obtaining permission to modify the curb cut at her
driveway thereby making it wheelchair accessible, is now receiving her mail
delivery directly to her door in place of requiring the previously sought curb cut
Chairman Kahen noted that the funds currently in the commission's account will
be used to purchase new commission shirts and collected sizes from the
commission members present.
Chairman Kahen read a thank you letter from Astro Amusements regarding their
recent receipt of the Golden Bison Award for which the Commission for Residents
with Disabilities had nominated them.
Chairman Kahen read a letter from Don Hedlund suggesting the "parking posse"
should have to authorization to write enforceable parking tickets. The
commission agreed that the letter made good points but that prior concerns
regarding safety and other factors made such infeasible. The group then
followed up with discussion regarding asking owners and developers to
voluntarily increase available handicapped parking or whether the commission
should seek a Village ordinance requiring additional handicapped stalls above
and beyond that required by the Illinois Accessibility Code.
V. Comm. Verson stated she had now booked the RIC Express for the 2003 Buffalo
Grove Days event. Discussion followed concerning the time, location, and parking for
the event. Chairman Kahen will follow up as necessary on these items.
VI. Sub-Committee Reports -
Community Service and Accessibility Sub-Committee - Chairman Kahen
reminded the commission that the Senior Expo was scheduled for Tuesday April
29th and passed around a mock up of the yellow smiley face rubber jar opener
that staff liaison Versten had designed and ordered for distribution at the event.
Chairman Kahen indicated he had discussed allowing disabled individuals to
come to the front of the line at the Post Office with Buffalo Grove Postmaster
Michael Wingstrom. Postmaster Wingstrom has agreed and will soon post a sign
Chairman Kahen provided to him displaying a handicapped logo and the phrase
"priority assistance available."
Business/CommunityAwareness Sub-Committee-The sub-committee discussed
a chamber luncheon presentation regarding local business and shopping center
owner sensitivity training. It was suggested that the commission ask Village
President Hartstein to send out invitations to the presentation as a mechanism to
boost attendance. Chairman Kahen suggested updating the etiquette brochures
from a few years ago as a hand out at the presentation.
Public Awareness Sub-Committee - Chairman Kahen indicated the commission
will seek a sponsor to fund a four-seater cart to be used this year for the Fine Arts
Festival instead of the two regular golf carts used last year. Comm. Sussman
volunteered AIM Business Printers to provide the approxiametly $300
sponsorship needed.
