MINUTES OF THE BUFFALO GROVE COMMISSION
FOR RESIDENTS WITH DISABILITIES MEETING
May 28, 2003
I. Call to Order—the meeting was called to order at 7:05 p.m. in the council chambers of
Buffalo Grove Village Hall.
II. Roll Call —Commissioners present included Chairman Kahen, Commissioners Chorney,
Gottlieb, Holm, Sussman, Verson, Weiner, Dumrauf, and Morton. Also present were staff
liaisons Versten and Swieca.
III. Approval of Minutes—none approved.
IV. Chairman's Report— Chairman Kahen relayed instances in regard to police enforcement
of handicapped parking.
He noted that he had a sent a letter to new Police Chief Steve Balinski congratulating him
on his appointment and requesting an introductory meeting at the Chief's earliest
convenience.
Next, Chairman Kahen reported on Buffalo Grove Days. Ronald McDonald will come to
the Fun and Food program after all.
Chairman Kahen reported that the exhibition wheelchair basketball games with the RIC
(Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago)Express would be located right outside the lower
level Village Hall entrance, behind Village Hall. It will be sectioned off not only for the
play area, but to allow enough additional space for parking for their players. This
arrangement is based thus far on Chairman Kahen's conversations with the co- chairs of
the BG Days Committee. Rick has four players thus far for the Village team.
A D.J. who will be performing in the food tent may be able to serve as MC for the
basketball game, or will at least be able to direct people, via announcements in the food
tent, from the food tent to the game area.
Commissioner Verson inquired about the parade float, who will create it, how, and who
would be participate in the parade. She asked whether anyone could get access to a flat
bed trailer and a vehicle with an appropriate hitch to pull it. Liaison Versten will inquire
about the flat bed with Ray Rigsby or Dale Duchommon at the park district. Other
Commissioners will look for a vehicle with a hitch. Liaison Kahn suggested that the
Village should be able to waive the participation fee for the parade. Commissioner Holm
suggested that we recruit the participation of the Buddy Baseball players.
Chairman Kahen noted that we are having trouble getting free hot dogs for the Fun and
Food portion of BG Days. Cravings had been providing the 450 free hot dogs for years,
steam cooked, inserted in the bun and wrapped in wax paper. They also delivered them
on site the morning of Fun and Food (Monday 10:30 AM). Now they say they can't do it.
Rick is talking to other possible vendors t try to solicit the hot dogs.
The Commission discussed setting up a booth to distribute information at BG Days, but
some concerns were expressed about whether Commissioners could staff it for the entire
time BG Days was open, while at the same time devoting some time to driving the
courtesy shuttle. The ideal would be to share a booth with another commission, have
informational hand-outs there for both commissions and split the "person power"
between the two (or three?) commissions. Liaison Versten will check to see if this
something the Youth and Arts Commissions would be interested in doing, or whether the
Village should just purchase an info booth space from the Chamber's Business Expo for
this type of use?
Chairman Kahen noted that he was included on a panel discussion of BG Days in a recent
videotaping of People, Places and Issues hosted by Village President Elliott Hartstein.
The program airs Sundays at 5 PM, Mondays at 7 PM, and Fridays at 9 PM.
Chairman Kahen next reported on the CRD's participation in the Buffalo Grove
Invitational Arts Festival, slated for July 26th and 27th at Town Center. A golf cart has
been ordered. Commissioner Gottlieb will make signs promoting the sponsor, AIM
Business Printers. Chairman Kahen will soon circulate a sign up sheet to reserve a shift
to drive the shuttle.
Commissioner Verson described an article she had read in the Sunday Tribune about a
juried art fair of visually challenged artists, and how they had a special category for
youth. Trustee liaison Kahn suggested that we relay this information to the Arts
Commission so that they could then approach Amdur Productions to extend the invitation
to better artists from this group to participate in the BG Invitational. It was noted that the
Arts Commission begins planning the annual art festival in October of each year.
V. Commissioners Reports—none.
VI. Sub-Committee Reports—
Community Service and Accessibility Sub-Committee Chairman Kahen reviewed
the complaint of a resident who, along with their disabled child, visited a Buffalo
Grove restaurant and was placed in a section of the dining room that was
constrained and awkward for the child. When they asked to be placed in a more
open area. Their requests were ignored. A letter was sent to the restaurant from the
CRD notifying the business owners that the Village has received the complaint and
offering to provide our resources on sensitivity training for restaurant staff.
Business/Community Awareness Sub-Committee the sub-committee is
continuing to formulate ideas for a brochure on how to treat people with
disabilities.
Public Awareness Sub-Committee Commissioner Holm read the article she
submitted for the summer village newsletter.

VII. Items for Discussion—None.
VIII. Staff Liaison Report—Liaison Versten reviewed the arrangements staff had made to
accept and relay medical items donated to the Vernon Township lending closet.

disabilities database throughout this meeting.
