2003-08-27 - Commission for Residents with Disabilities - Minutes Board or Commission: ❑ Commission on Residents With Disabilities Document Type: ❑Agenda 0 Minutes Meeting Date: 08/27/2003 Type of Meeting: ❑ Regular Meeting MINUTES OF THE BUFFALO GROVE COMMISSION FOR RESIDENTS WITH DISABILITIES MEETING August 27, 2003 I. Call to Order-The meeting was called to order at 7 p.m. II. Roll Call -Commissioners present included Chairman Kahen, Commissioners Sussman, Holm, Verson, Gottlieb, Dumrauf, and Morton. Also present was Staff Liaison Versten. Sharon Rothstein, a resident from Hidden Lakes, was also present. III. Approval of Minutes-A motion to approve the minutes of the 7/23 was made by Comm. Sussman and seconded by Comm. Gottlieb. Motion Carried. IV. Chairman's Report-Chairman Kahen reviewed a flyer regarding Wheeling Township's Halloween Event for kids with disabilities: October 25 Fun Fair for Children w/Disabilities - reservations required. Chairman Kahen shared the main points of a phone conversation he had with a resident named Barbara who is legally blind and had questions about transportation. Rick reviewed with her the discussions that have taken place at the Commission thus far in regard to transportation, and provided her information on the Village's taxi cab subsidy program and the services offered by the townships that serve Buffalo Grove. Chairman Kahen noted that he had found a good web site for "Scoot Around," a scooter and wheelchair rental service: scootaround.com. Chairman Kahen reviewed a letter he had gotten from Mike Rylko. Safety Town will find a permanent location at the new Twin Creeks Park, being developed at the SW corner of Buffalo Grove Road and Aptakisic. Also, Rick noted that he and Dean Klassman had met with Mike Rylko and had discussed a one-acre Village-owned parcel adjacent to the park parcel and how, if the Village would deed it to the park district, it could be developed as a dedicated buddy baseball field. Commissioner Holm expressed concerns about less visibility for such a facility at this park over that which Willow Stream Park could lend. Chairman Kahen tabled discussion until Commissioner Klassman could participate in discussion. Buffalo Grove Days-Chairman Kahen reviewed the following: • courtesy shuttle driver schedule. • display board reserved with updated graphics. • everyone should be ion festival grounds at 9 AM Monday for the "Fun and Food program. • Other details and logistics. V. Commissioners' Reports-Comm. Holm stated that she had attended a round table coordinated by Terry Mahme on transportation issues for persons with disabilities. Debby will invite her to a CRD meeting. Commissioner Verson will get a list of Chicago area artists with disabilities to forward to organizers of the Arts Festival for next year's planning, which begins in January. Commissioner Holm noted that Lamb's Farm would be holding a "Buddy Walk" on September 5th featuring Chris Burke and Michael Johnson. VI. Sub-Committee Reports-Commissioner Verson distributed the draft text from a sensitivity brochure her sub-committee is working on. VI I. Items for Discussion - None. Vill. Staff Liaison Report- Mr. Versten reviewed correspondence, which included a letter from the Jewish Vocational Services concerning their provision of signing services, and a press release regarding Clearbrook's upcoming Casino Night. IX. Questions form the Audience- None. X. Other Business- None. XI Adjournment - Motion to adjourn made by Comm. Holm and seconded by Comm. Morton. Meeting adjourned at 8:15 pm.
