Chairman's Report— Chairman Kahen asked if the commission was agreeable to meet on May 19 in lieu of the regular meeting of May 26 due to a conflict in scheduling. The commission agreed. The Chairman reminded the commission that tomorrow night (3/25) was the volunteer reception for members of commissions and committees. The event will be held at 6:00 p.m. at the Arboretum Club. Chairman Kahen reported that the proposed scholarship program had been halted by the Village, citing funding concerns. He read aloud a letter from Village President Hartstein stating the Village will consider funding the scholarships if feasible. In regards to previous inquiries regarding service for the disabled at fuel stations Chairman Kahen noted the ADA report which he had previously forwarded via email. Comm. Sussman stated she understood the loophole which does not require fuel stations with only one employee on duty to provide the service, but noted that if the station regularly only has one employee on duty, and therefore cannot provide the service, that they should remove the handicapped logo from the pumps. The Chairman provided a summary of the Buffalo Grove Days Parade Float voting which indicated 3 in favor, 5 opposed, and one abstention. The commission will therefore not be preparing a float for the Buffalo Grove Days parade. Chairman Kahen asked Trustee Liaison Kahn to elaborate on why power-assist doors were not included in the 2004-05 budget year. Trustee Liaison Kahn indicated it was strictly a budgetary issue and both that issue and the Village Hall Security improvements were difficult decisions for the Village Board to make. V. Commissioners Reports— Commissioner Klassman stated that the Center for Enriched Living, of which he is a member, is the best kept secret around. The center is located in Riverwoods and functions as a recreation center for persons with disabilities of all age groups. Commissioner Klassman suggested we have a representative come in and speak to the commission about the services they offer. In the meantime, he will bring in a brochure to share with the group. VI. Sub-Committee Reports—None. VIL Items for Discussion—None. VIIL Staff Liaison Report Fire Department Liaison Swieca indicated he had reviewed both the School Emergency Evacuation and 911 Surveys. He indicated that both documents are acceptable with the disclaimer as written. He suggested that the School Emergency Evacuation Survey be mailed to the principal, rather then the School Superintendent, because that is the individual that would have the best information on special needs students within the school building. Fire Department Liaison Swieca also referenced a emergency and evacuation training program for businesses offered by F.E.M.A. He has downloaded this program from the F.E.M.A. website and it could be put on CD's and distributed to businesses for a nominal fee covering preparation of the CD's. Chairman Kahen requested that Staff Liaison Versten print and distribute a copy of the program. IX. Questions form the Audience—None. X. Other Business— Chairman Kahen indicated that the Buffalo Grove Fine Arts Invitational Festival will be held July 17th and I sth and the commission needs to seek a $300 donation to cover the cost of the shuttle cart. The chairman also stressed that last year the residents with disabilities preview session was lightly attended and that the commission should seek a better turn out this year. The commission suggested boosting attendance by partnering with Amdur Productions to direct mail the addresses contained in the commission's database. The Arts Commission is coordinating a new program called "sitting pretty in Buffalo Grove." The program will consist of painting benches similar to the "Buffaloes on Parade" painted buffalo program. Chairman Kahen will seek additional information from Linda Rosen and Ghida Neukirch. XI Adjournment — Motion to adjourn made by Comm. Holm and seconded by Comm. Sussman.
