FOR RESIDENTS WITH DISABILITIES MEETING
SPECIAL MEETING OF MAY 19, 2004
I. Call to Order—The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. in the main level meeting room at
the Buffalo Grove Police Department.
IL Roll Call—Commissioners present included Chairman Kahen, Commissioners Morton, Sussman,
Weiner,Holm, and Gottlieb. Also present were Staff Liaisons Versten and Swieca,Trustee Glover, and
guest Gerilyn Miller-Brown.
III. Approval of Minutes—Minutes of the April 28 meeting will be included- along with these-for
approval on the June 23rd agenda.
IV. Chairman's Report—New Applicant-Chairman Kahen introduced Gerilyn Miller-Brown, an
applicant for appointment to the Commission. Ms. Miller-Brown shared a story about how the park
district and the commission worked to install a handicapped swing in the park near her home for the 7
year old daughter. She presented a thank you letter from her daughter.
Ethics Statements - Chairman Kahen called for all ethics statements to be turned in. Completed
and signed statements were received from all commission members present.
Power Assist Front Doors - Chairman Kahen reported that the power assist mechanism will be
installed on the front doors of the main entry to village hall some time soon, probably in June.
Mr. Versten noted that the purchase order would be sent out this week.
Art Festival — Chairman Kahen noted that, as it stands now, the Art Festival will not have a
preview, but they suggested that the early part of the regular program be promoted as a preview
to seniors and persons with disabilities, as that is the best time to come to the art festival in
terms of avoiding crowds. Chairman Kahen noted that he would prefer not to call such a
"preview" unless it actually precedes the event opening to the public and noted that he counter
proposed to Assistant Village Manager Neukirch that the festival open a half hour early on
Sunday July 18 to enable an actual preview. As of this meeting, Chairman Kahen has not yet
heard back regarding his proposal.
Chairman Kahen announced that he will be accepting volunteer sign ups from among
commission members and any others that may be interested. Commissioner Gottlieb will make
signs for the cart, to include the newly adopted commission logo, as well as the logo of the
sponsor,AIM Business Printers.
BG Days — Chairman Kahen recapped all contacts he has made thus far regarding contributors
for Fun and Food. They include Drew at Wiener Take All, a contact at Hostess, Outback and
the Village Grill. Chairman Kahen reported that it is diffictilt to contact Drew, and recently
wrote him a letter to which he has not yet had a reply, so he is not certain of Weiner Take All's
commitment. Rick advised the commission that anyone else having leads on food or gift
donations for Fun and Food should finalize them by the next meeting.
CRD Logo—There is a possibility that the CRD logo used on recent brochures will be used on
the vehicle stickers for next year. Commissioner Morton moved to adopt the logo as the official
logo of the Commission for residents with Disabilities. Commissioner Wiener seconded the
motion. All voted in favor. Commissioner Morton suggested that the Village trademark or
copyright the logo as appropriate. Commissioner Morton's son, who designed the logo, will
forward Mr. Versten a higher resolution version of the graphic, suitable for forwarding to
Assistant Village Manager Bill Brimm for possible inclusion on the vehicle stickers.
Buddy Baseball—Chairman Kahen reported that the establishment of a dedicated diamond is
still a possibility, per his recent conversation with Village Manager Bill Balling. He noted that a
meeting was scheduled for today between the park district and village engineer to discuss the
redrawing of FEMA stormwater management maps, one of which includes a site being
considered for the diamond. Rick stated that he will report back when he knows more.
9-1-1 Surveys—Rick asked for an update of the surveys, reporting that he had received his
survey in his water bill. Mr. Swieca estimated that about 200 surveys had come in thus far, and
that he would soon be contacting Phil Knox from IT to finalize the database for inputting the
data. The Commission discussed options for tabulations of the data that they would like to see.
It was agreed that a report by types of disabilities could be useful, as well as type of disability by
age. It was further agreed that a complete mailing list be established off of the database, as well
as mailing lists by 1) disability and 2) areas of interest.
Commissioners Reports— Commissioner
Sub-Committee Reports — Commissioner Wiener discussed the final draft of the brochure.
Minor changes were suggested. Mr. Versten will revise the brochure and send the final to
Commissioner Sussman for printing. Distribution will include all public events in which the
commission participates, as well as making the brochures available at village hall, and the police
station.
Commissioner Weiner noted that the next brochure will be aimed at the business community in
regard to disabilities issues of customers and employees. Chairman Kahen suggested that we use
the business license database to mail those along with asking the chamber for inclusion as an
insert in their monthly newsletter.
VI. Items for Discussion—None.
VII. Staff Liaison Report—Mr. Swieca noted that the management company of the Grove Terrace
condominium was working on their elevators at 300, 350, and 400 West Dundee. He stated that the Fire
Department would be providing their Board a demonstration of the stair chairs and encouraging the
board to purchase one. Currently, disabled residents of these condos are relying on the fire department
to carry them up and down the stairs whenever they encounter problems with building elevators.
The FEMA Emergency Preparedness Initiative was reviewed and noted. Mr. Swieca also noted
that an Illinois Urban Search and Rescue Team had been formed and is operating out of the
Northern Illinois Public Safety Training Association (NIPSTA) location (the old Glenview
Naval Air Base). Three of the members are from Buffalo Grove.
Mr. Versten recapped the Senior Expo and presented a certificate to the commission for their
participation.
VIII. Questions from the Audience—Geri Miller-Brown distributed a notice of a canning event on
June 6th to benefit Keshet, an organization that provides educational, recreational and vocational
programs for children and young adults with developmental disabilities.
IX. Other Business—Commissioner Morton suggested that members of the CRD replace one of
their regular meetings with a meeting wherein all members are trained for certification in CPR. It was
suggested that this be dome after BG Days.
Commissioner Morton distributed a leaflet from the Buffalo Grove Fraternal Order of Police
Lodge 74 promoting their Special Olympics Scotch Doubles Bowling Event fundraiser on
Friday June 4th at 6:30 PM at Hawthorne Lanes in Vernon Hills.
