MINUTES OF THE BUFFALO GROVE COMMISSION
FOR RESIDENTS WITH DISABILITIES MEETING
JUNE 23, 2004
I. Call to Order—The meeting was called to order at 7:05 p.m.
IL Roll Call— Commissioners present included Chairman Kahen, Commissioners Dumrauf,
Gottlieb, Holm, Miller-Brown, Morton, Sussman, and Verson. Also present were Staff Liaison
Summers and Fire Department Liaison Sweica.
III. Approval of Minutes—A motion to approve the minutes of the 5/19 meeting was made
by Comm. Morton and seconded by Comm. Sussman. Motion Carried.
IV. Chairman's Report— Chairman Kahen asked if the Commission members would be
receiving new wallet-size ID cards like the green cards they had in the past. Comm. Morton
presented his E.S.D.A. Committee ID card indicating that they received plastic photo ID cards.
Chairman Kahen asked staff to look into getting the Commission the plastic photo ID cards.
Chairman Kahen advised that the purchase order had been placed for the power assist
front doors for Village Hall. Staff Liaison Summers relayed that the project at this point
was approximately one month behind schedule and should commence in July.
Chairman Kahen indicated that Grove Terrace Condominiums are currently repairing
their elevators making it difficult for persons with disabilities to get to units above the
first floor. Fire Department Liaison Sweica indicated the first and second buildings
were complete and that the stair chair had been placed in the third building. He also
indicated that residents can call the Fire Department if they need assistance getting in
or out of their building.
Chairman Kahen asked Comm. Morton to have his son finish the high resolution
version of the Commission's newly adopted logo and transmit the file to Staff Liaison
Versten for consideration for the new Village vehicle sticker. Comm. Morton indicated
his son will finish and transmit the file before the end of the week
V. Commissioners Reports— Comm. Sussman announced that her new email address was
scihandon@comcast.net effective immediately.
Comm. Miller-Brown distributed copies of a newspaper article titled "A Touch of
Independence" about a Rita Angelini working with the Prospect Heights Library to
make children's book accessible to non-verbal children. Comm. Miller-Brown asked if
the Commission was interested in getting involved with the Indian Trails and Vernon
Area Library Districts to do the same. Chairman Kahen indicated that the Commission
could contact the library districts and seek feedback on their interest.
VI. Sub-Committee Reports—None.
VIL Items for Discussion—None.
VIIL Staff Liaison Report— Fire Department Liaison Sweica indicated that he was still
receiving returned surveys. Some of the respondents do not wish to share their information
with the Commission. He will input serious issues into the CAD/MED files at the Fire
Department then forward the responses of those who signed the HIPAA release to the Staff
Liaison Versten so that they can be entered into the Commission database.
IX. Questions form the Audience—None.
X. Other Business— Comm. Verson indicated she will work on the school evacuation
survey to finalize it for mailing.
XI. Chairman Kahen indicated that he had talked to Weiner Take All and they will supply
food for the Fun and Food program consistent with last year. Hostess will provide desserts,
promotional items, and the Twinkie the Kid costume. The Commission will need to find
someone to dress in the costume. Chairman Kahen asked Comm. Verson to contact RIC
Express regarding wheelchair basketball to verify if they will be committing to the event or
not. Goody bags for BG Days will be stuffed following the July meeting which will begin 30
minutes earlier than normal.
Chairman Kahen presented a Arts Festival Shuttle sign up. Times for the shuttle run in
two hours slots from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. (the Art Festival runs
10:00 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days). Chairman Kahen will coordinate with Assistant Village
Manger Neukirch regarding storing the cart in the festival office overnight instead of
returning it to the golf course. Comm. Gottlieb provided laminated "courtesy shuttle"
signs featuring the Commission's newly adopted logo. Chairman Kahen reported that
there will not be a special preview for resident with disabilities or the elderly at the Art
Festival this year due to poor attendance in previous years.
Comm. Sussman indicated that the brochures the Commission had produced were not
yet printed because she had not yet received the electronic file from Staff Liaison
Versten. Subsequent follow-up indicated the file was transmitted on May 20, but Staff
Liaison Versten redistributed it since Comm. Sussman had not received the files. The
Commission discussed various to distribute the brochure including at the Art Festival,
BG Days, and the Senior Expo. Additionally, the Commission asked that an
announcement about the availability of the brochure be made on Channel 6, the
Commission's webpage, and in the next edition of the Village Newsletter. It was
determined distributing printed copies of the brochure in the Village Newsletter was
cost prohibitive.
XI Adjournment — Motion to adjourn made by Comm. Morton and seconded by Comm.
Verson. Meeting adjourned at 8:05 p.m.
