MINUTES OF THE BUFFALO GROVE COMMISSION
FOR RESIDENTS WITH DISABILITIES MEETING
JULY 28, 2004
L Call to Order—The meeting was called to order at 6:35 p.m.
IL Roll Call— Commissioners present included Chairman Kahen, Commissioners Dumrauf,
Gottlieb, Miller-Brown, Morton, Sussman, and Weiner. Also present were Staff Liaison
Versten and Fire Department Liaison Swieca.
III. Approval of Minutes—A motion to approve the minutes of the 4/28 meeting was made
by Comm. Morton and seconded by Comm. Gottlieb. Motion Carried. Another motion to
approve the minutes of the 6/23 meeting was made by Comm. Morton and seconded by Comm.
Gottlieb. Motion Carried.
IV. Chairman's Report— Chairman Kahen relayed the details of a conversation he had with
a resident who called to ask what she could do to stop her homeowners association from
spraying pesticides for fear that it could aggravate her asthma. Chairman Kahen explained that
he didn't think that the ADA covered that.
Chairman Kahen next reported on several Buffalo Grove Days items:
• Dominick's will supply pop for BG Days instead of Jewel this year.
• Wheelchair Basketball— several elected officials signed up. The park district is making
arrangements to for delivery, set up and removal of the baskets. The game will be located
outside the food tent by the public works building at 1 PM on Monday.
• Chairman Kahen solicited courtesy shuttle driver sign-ups.
• In response to a suggestion by Commissioner Klassman that the Fun and Food program
re-emphasize and commit more of it's activities to children with disabilities (over the families
and accompanying people), Staff liaison Swieca suggested that we expand the carnival hours
and having s sponsor possibly covering the additional hour if need be.
Chairman Kahen noted that the Art Fair was a success and expressed his gratitude to
those who helped out.
Chairman Kahen reviewed recent articles in the Chicago papers about the Buddy
Baseball facility construction projects and noted that in a recent conversation, Buffalo
Grove Park District Parks and Recreations Director Mike Rylko estimated the cost for
a dedicated Buddy Baseball field at $360,000 and that space is available at the northwest
corner of Aptakisic and Buffalo Grove Road. He said that the park district could, as of
now, break ground as soon as August 2005 provided the project is funded. The park
district is working with the Miracle Board in seeking funding.
V. Commissioners Reports— Comm. Miller-Brown notified the Commission of a new
facility in Highland Park for children with and without disabilities, called the Early Childhood
Center for Innovative Learning. The Center is constructing a playground an accessible
playground, and is seeking volunteers to participate in their August 5th playground build day.
Enrollment of students is now underway. Staff Liaison Versten will put notice on the cable TV
bulletin board.
VI. Sub-Committee Reports—None.
VIL Items for Discussion—None.
VIIL Staff Liaison Report— Staff Liaison Versten distributed a final copy of the CRD logo for
comments. Chairman Kahen again noted that it was being circulated among Trustees for
consideration for inclusion on the 2005 vehicle stickers. Chairman Kahen asked Commissioner
Morton to pass along his thanks to his son,Josh, for his volunteer efforts in designing the logo.
Liaison Versten next noted that he had received materials from Response Link, a private
sector firm that provides an emergency notification system, in the form of a button
worn on a pendant that sends an emergency notification signal to an emergency services
center. Fire Department liaison Swieca noted that the Fire Department keeps files of
such services for informational purposes and asked liaison Versten to forward the
literature to him. Liaison Versten did so.
IX. Questions from the Audience—No audience was present.
X. Other Business— Staff liaison Versten took photos of all commissioners in attendance
for photo I.D. cards.
XI Adjournment — Motion to adjourn made by Comm. Sussman and seconded by Comm.
Weiner. Meeting adjourned at 7:20 p.m. to stuff goodie bags for the BG Days Fun and
Food program.
