IL Roll Call - Rick Kahen, Trustee Glover, Debbie Verson, Beverly Sussman,
Mark Weiner, Dave Morton, Geri Miller-Brown, Larry K. Swieca. Dean Klassman
arrived at 1927hrs.
III. Approval of Minutes - Minutes of April 20, 2005 approved with changes
from Chairman Kahen & Commissioner Miller-Brown, (motion by Commissioner
Morton second by Commissioner Miller-Brown)
IV. Chairman's report: Oath of Office and ethics statements — several returned.
(Chairman Kahen and commissioners Sussman & Miller-Brown).
Update on Phil Versten: complications after his arthroscopic surgery, blood clot
developed. Phil is currently in a wheelchair at home, does not expect to be back
to work until August. Chairman Kahen will e-mail Phil's address to commission
members.
New Village Board Liaisons will be Trustee Brian Rubin and most likely Trustee
Bruce Kahn.
Any new prospects for Commission membership? Commissioner Sussman has 2
potential members. 1 person is disabled the other has a child with learning
disabilities.
Chairman Kahen received a citizen complaint regarding parking at the Village
Hall and traveling up the ramp to the front door. There has been talk over the
years but nothing definitive. Is there a way to make the downstairs entrance (by
Building & Zoning), the accessible entrance?
Suggestions from Commission included signs indicating access from lower level,
adding 1 more handicapped space for lower level and signage indicating access from
Building & Zoning. The optimal solution would a power door for the lower level
Trustee Glover will approach Mr. Balling regarding the matter.
Commissioner Verson raised a question regarding Handicapped Parking spaces.
In Villa Verde they have assigned the Handicapped spaces to individual residents. Does
this meet the code or violate it? There are no spaces for the general public to use.
Suggested that if they don't have extra spaces the Village should send a letter.
Review of last month's question regarding the location of the spaces at the Bank
of America. These spots are the closest to the curb cut.
Twin Groves Middle School & Aptakisic Junior High need upright signage.
Suggestion that the Commission produce a video talking about the necessity of
keeping the striped space next to a Handicapped space open to allow for wheelchairs to
exit a van from the side. The Commission might be able to produce a 3-4 minute video
for Channel 6
Rick received a call from State Representative Kathy Ryg that HB 0383
regarding public schools sponsored by State Representative Sid Mathias had passed and
they were working to amend it to add evacuation plans.
An article on Adaptive recreation given to Commissioner Miller-Brown for
review.
Mike Rylko from the Park District sent a message to the Commission that the
miracle field will be ready for next year. All equipment will be adaptive, poured rubber
in place of wood chips and 36 parking spaces. Commissioner Klassman has concerns
that there may be insufficient parking. Today's (May 25) Buddy Baseball game had
close to 80 people including players and buddies.
Trustee Glover remarked on an article detailing that there has been a marked
increase in children with disabilities but no reasons were given for the increase.
The Art Festival is July 16 & 17. Home Depot is donating $250 to pay for the
rental of the golf cart being used as the shuttle.
Will need 3 drivers each day on Saturday & Sunday.

Art Festival posters are being sold. The proceeds are supposed to come back
to the Commission.
Route for the Art Fest Shuttle — can the BGPW sign shop produce signage for
the far reaches of the parking lot indicating that this is a shuttle stop? E-mail sent
to AVM Neukirch June 21.
BG Days Goody bags. The Commission has many water bottles left, but what
else is left from last year? Chairman Kahen and B/C Swieca to check this out June
22 prior to the meeting.
V. Commissioners Reports -Commissioner Miller-Brown stated that Stevenson
High School is selling a "Livestrong" type bracelet for Relay for Life and was
wondering if the Commission could produce something similar perhaps as a give-away.
Chairman Kahen suggested that maybe the proceeds from the poster sales could finance
this project.
Commissioner Verson will call the wheelchair basketball team again regarding
a game at BG Days on Monday after the carnival.
VI. Sub-Committee Reports - Commissioner Verson - Brochure committee
has had 2 meetings, working on a new layout. They think it will be good.
VII. Items for Discussion - BG DAYS
Commissioner Verson suggested a mouth or foot painter (as in "My Left Foot")
could do a demonstration at BG Days. She will look into finding and
contacting someone in the area.
Commissioner Klassman suggested that perhaps a "Buddy Basketball" game
could be attempted. Much discussion ensued. Commissioners Verson, Morton
and Klassman think it is a good idea because it gets more children involved.
Chairman Kahen wondered if the Wheelchair Express basketball team could
integrate or organize. Perhaps a 30 minute demo game from the IRC then a 30
minute game of Buddy Basketball. Commissioner Verson to call IRC and ask
them for ideas or contacts. Commissioner Verson to report back in June.
There is need of a PA system for the game.
Any activity would have to start at 1300hrs because of scheduling.
Chairman Kahen believes that the Commission receives $800 from the Village
each year. It does not rollover.
VIIL Staff Liaison Report - NONE
IX. Questions from the Audience - NONE
X. Other Business - Commission applications go to President Hartstein first
with input from Chairman Kahen. An interview may be scheduled with prospective
