MINUTES OF THE BUFFALO GROVE COMMISSION
FOR RESIDENTS WITH DISABILITIES MEETING
August 24, 2005
I. Call to Order - Meeting called to order by Chairman Kahen at 1840 hours.
IL Roll Call - Rick Kahen, Trustee Rubin, Sue Gottlieb, Mark Weiner, Debbie
Verson, Geri Miller-Brown, Dean Klassman, Mara Sabath, Larry K. Swieca. Dave
Morton arrived 7:00 pm.
III. Approval of Minutes - Minutes of July 27, 2005 approved with this change —
Sue Gottlieb did not make the motion for a112roval of June minutes. Motion by
Commissioner Klassman, second by Commissioner Weiner
IV. Chairman's report:
Introduced Mara Sabath to the Commission as its newest member. Group
introductions. Need to contact Human Resources regarding a photo for her ID
Card.
Parking Fines:
State of Illinois has beaten us to the punch. HB 1316 effective January 1, 2006
raises the fines for parking in a handicapped space from $100 to $250 across the
State. Municipalities can add another $100 to a total of$350.
Commission should redraft request to Village to raise fine in Buffalo Grove to
$350 with the extra $100 coming back to the Commission for capital
improvement projects.
In the Paper today. Kane County is starting a confidential registry to guide
emergency workers in helping citizens with special needs.
Inclusion Solutions, a business based in Chicago contacted Chairman Kahen.
They are a one-stop shop for solutions to all accessibility needs. They will send
the Commission a catalog of their products.
V. Commissioner's Reports
Commissioners Gottlieb & Miller-Brown attended the Wheeling Township
Disabilities Council meeting. The Council had different service providers at the
meeting with a brief overview of services provided:
Special Education District 21 — Lockdown drills
NWSRA— Year round programs for all ages
Wheeling High School District 214 has a program called Acts of Kindness,
where students help seniors with acts of kindness.
From Governor Blagojevich — No response from the Governor's Office
regarding the Illinois Office of Rehab Services. Commissioners Gottlieb &
Miller-Brown showed the Council our brochure and the info from our dialog
with State Representative Kathy Ryg.
The Township currently has bus service Monday thru Friday. It goes to
Lutheran General Hospital and 3 other hospitals also. Wheeling Township has
joined with 4 other townships to create the Township Riders Initiative Pilot
(TRIP) program. This program will start in September and run from 4am to
9pm daily. It will also go to the Veteran's hospital and other downtown
hospitals.
A suggestion by Trustee Rubin that the Commission approach Vernon
Township with a list of services offered by Wheeling Township to see if they
are willing to improve their services.

If you have a hearing loss you may call the State of Illinois and obtain an
amplified phone. Go to Schaumburg Township with a letter from your
audiologist, State ID or Driver's License and a copy of your phone bill.

Commissioner Miller-Brown: Andy from State Representative Ryg's office
called about a block grant to rehab buildings. Unfortunately Buffalo Grove is
not eligible because it does not have a low enough income.
Park where swing is was recently resurfaced and there is problem with the
marking of one of the spots. She will e-mail a picture to Chairman Kahen.
Have not visited Twin Groves School yet.
The Department of Justice is conducting an on-line course for business
owners; Reaching Out to Customers with Disabilities: An On-Line ADA
Course for Businesses explains in ten short lessons how the ADA applies to

needs to ask Leisa if this link can be put on the website and added to the
listserv. Lynne Schneider from the Chamber of Commerce has not responded.
Wyndham Parking. Met with Ed Schar — curb cuts are not near the doors.
Commissioner Sussman reports there is a buzzer near the side doors.
Commission to contact the hotel to see if they would be willing to put 2
spaces under the canopy, marked as temporary handicapped parking for
registration only. After registration the person would move to the regular spot
and access the side door with the key card. Thanks again to Ed Schar.
VI. Sub-Committee Reports:
Commissioner Weiner is working on the brochure for businesses, detailing
the importance of making your business accessible.

BG DAYS SHUTTLE UPDATE
Shuttle will be in parade.
Commissioner Gottlieb gave signs for the shuttle to Chairman Kahen.

BG DAYS UPDATE:
Commissioner Holm e-mailed the Park District about the possibility of
having wheelchair racers in the Stampede next year.
BG Days Wheelchair Basketball
At some point the RIC Express will play against the trustees.
Buddy part — kids with players
Clinic will be first.
Then the Buddy Basketball game. 12:30 to 12:50 or 1:00. RIC will be the
buddies for the kids playing. (Announce kids)
At 1:00pm there will be a short exhibition game of the RIC Express against the
Trustees.
Commissioner Sabath will make and donate 20 shirts for the participants.
Need to contact Leisa Niemotka about media coverage of the event. RIC are the
National Champions.
