February 22, 2006
Call to Order - Meeting called to order by Chairman Kahen at 1902 hours.
Roll Call - Rick Kahen, Sue Gottlieb, Dean Klassman, Geri Miller-Brown, Dave
Morton, Debbie Verson, Mark Weiner, Debbie Holm, Mara Sabath, Judy Samuels &
Larry K. Swieca. Excused: Beverly Sussman & Brian Rubin.
Approval of Minutes - Minutes of January 25, 2006. Motion by Commissioner
Klassman, second by Commissioner Morton. Approved.
Chairman's report:
Welcome from Chairman Kahen & rest of Commission to new Commissioner Judy
Samuels.
Chairman Kahen attended the first 2006 BG Days Committee meeting; brought up
idea of karaoke. Also asked if the Chamber of Commerce no longer holds their
softball game if this could be the date of a special exhibition game , (an inaugural
game), at the Miracle Field? The field won't be ready until sometime in July
which is after the season. This could coincide with its dedication and give us time
to place an article in the Village Newsletter.
Mike Rylko& Larry Reiner will be at the April 2 Commission meeting to show a video
on the Miracle Field.
E-mail dialogue between Lou Malnati's but no signage yet regarding "Accessible
pickup inside front entrance"
2-3 months till full compliance on new handicapped parking fines. If any commissioner
sees an old sign e-mail Chairman Kahen & he will forward to Building &
Zoning.
Art Festival, The golf cart for the courtesy shuttle has not been ordered yet. Aim
printing paid for the cart last year. If a sponsor is not found for this year
Chairman Kahen will recommend the Village pick up the cost of$300 or so.
Disabled artists at the Fest, too late for this year. Send info to AVM Neukirch or
Amy Amdur in August or September for next year.
Commissioner Klassman thinks the artists should be contacted by Amdur, go through
the same screening process and be eligible for judging.
At LOAM on Sunday, there will be a preview for seniors and Special Needs residents.
Commissioner Miller-Brown asked if we wished to send an invitation to group homes
to see the exhibition. Does anyone want to volunteer to work at the fest in some
way?
Chairman Kahen said the Commission could send letters to the Center for Enriched
Living, NWSRA, etc. Commissioner Massman thinks the Arts Commission
should be contacting the organizations. Also, Commissioner Klassman
wondered if the phrase "Handicapped Accessible " be added to the posters.
Chairman Kahen will double-check but that information is added to the ads.
Commissioner Weiner asked Commissioner Version "If the artists do this
professionally wouldn't they already know about the fest?" But artists at BG Days
should be no problem.
In the last week of April their will be a Fine Arts Initiative for disabled artists —
Commissioner Miller-Brown will send info to the rest of the Commission.
Chairman Kahen inquired if anyone knows if Clearbrook sends out donation cards.
He wishes to send one to Trustee Rubin from the Commission.
New e-mail address for Commissioner Holm: Debbby@aol.com.
Commissioner Samuels added to the roster.
Commissioner Samuels asked about RSVP'ing for the volunteer function at the
Arboretum. She also inquired about Prairie School Handicapped Parking. They
need to have stand up poles for the signs.
Commissioner's Reports:
Commissioner Holm stated that the Archdiocese of Chicago is starting an
initiative to make the parishes more accessible —"Equipping the Church for
Disability Ministry & Outreach" Commissioner Holm attended the second
meeting—they already have committees set up. Meeting was on February 13 at
St. Mary's. The e-mail of the deacon at the church who is the contact is
Dwossnick(a_),aol.com . They have a day where they collect wheelchairs,
refurbish them and give them away. Commissioner Holm had called the pastor
and asked to attend. St. Mary's told Commissioner Holm that they think they are
99% accessible and very close to being where they should be. Accessibility can
include a ramp, large—print books and assistive audio devices but for example a
lecturer still has to climb several steps to get to the lectern. The Woman's Guild
has tried to get a Disability guild going for years unsuccessfully. Parishes around
Buffalo Grove are doing things. For example the church in Vernon Hills is having
a Day of Renewal for the disabled, their families and caregivers. They are
providing a free lunch and a sign language interpreter. The liaison is Cookie
Luckew.
Can the CRD help by sending a representative and the pamphlet from NOD for
accessible churches?
Website is WWW.DOPM.ORG phone # 847-549-0160 DOPM.
Commissioner Holm has a questionnaire on "How Accessible Is your Church?"
and a disability etiquette brochure. The brochure will be given to Commissioner
Weiner to include in the business brochure.
Does anyone from the Commission want to contact all the churches in the Village
and check on accessibility? Commissioner Holm will check with the deacon on
using his checklist for non-Catholic congregations.
Commissioners Gottlieb and Miller-Brown attended the Wheeling Township
Council meeting. There were 2 speakers from Department of Health and Human
Services. The qualifications to receive benefits have tightened up; now need to
meet 3 out of 7 criteria. Only serving the neediest. Mostly talked about mental
illness —functional impairment affecting work. Hard to get to work, hope that
next year TRIP will be able to get these people to their jobs.
Commissioner Miller-Brown stated that Countryside is going after corporate
sponsors. Also she has been unable to actually talk to the liaison for the Secretary
of State. Their office will send a speaker but they have no apparent videos
regarding handicapped parking.
Commissioner Miller—Brown asked for an update on the family bathroom at the
Miracle Field. There is a separate bathroom designed for staff. It is kept locked
but the Park District will make certain that Commissioner Klassman will have a
key or whoever is running Buddy Baseball that game.
