MINUTES OF THE BUFFALO GROVE COMMISSION
FOR RESIDENTS WITH DISABILITIES MEETING
April 26, 2006
Call to Order - Meeting called to order by Chairman Kahen at 19:05 hours.
Roll Call - Rick Kahen, Mara Sabath, Debbie Holm, Mark Weiner, Beverly Sussman,
Sue Gottlieb, Judy Samuels Brian Rubin, Dean Klassman, Geri Miller-Brown, Debbie
Verson, Larry K. Swieca. Excused: Dave Morton
Guests: Mike Rylko and Larry Reiner from the Buffalo Grove Park District.
Approval of Minutes - Minutes of March 22, 2006. Motion, Commissioner
Sabath second, Commissioner Sussman. Approved.
Chairman's report:
Welcome to Mike Rylko & Larry Reiner. They had a DVD regarding the Miracle
Field that the Park District is finishing up.
Inaugural Game will be the Sunday of BG Days (Sept 3) at 4PM. Rain date of Monday
Sept 4 at 3PMCommissioner Sabath says her company would do the balloons for the
dedication Official Groundbreaking not yet set. Presentation previously shown to
Rotary, Illinois Miracle Field and the National Miracle Field. Spoke on differences
between Illinois and rest of the country.
Discussed the origination of the Special Recreation Districts in Illinois (1974), how
they were modeled after the Special Ed Districts and only exist in this form in
Illinois.Discussed how the tax rate has now been increased for the first time since 1991
and park districts are now playing catch up.
Miracle Field has good support from Rotary, church groups and parent groups. There
are currently 4 Miracle Fields in Illinois: Geneva, Roselle, Chicago's South Side and
now Buffalo Grove. Cost of Field $500K out of$2.3 million for the entire park.
Need to partner with other civic groups to keep the field up and going and state of the
art. Planned to eventually be a lighted field. Gym shoes only on field—no spikes.For
2006 BGRA currently has 3 Buddy Baseball teams with 15, 17, & 22 children plus
buddies. Rotary is looking to raise funds for a scoreboard or a PA system. CRD
recommends the PA system.
Park District has contracted with the National Center on Accessibility (NCA), to help
develop a 10-15 year plan, (NCA already partnered with the National Parks and
Recreation Association and Indiana University). NCA will go through all 50 park
sites in town and identify what needs to be upgraded. After identification the
items will be prioritized and work will begin to upgrade the facilities.
Art Festival (7/15 & 7/16): Sign up sheets for the Art Festival Shuttle passed around to
be filled out.
Commissioner Verson is pursuing inviting disabled artists (such as foot or mouth
painters)to exhibit at the 2007 Art Festival. 1 artist lives in this area.
At the June meeting the sign up sheet for BG Days will be available. Will need drivers
during the Buddy Baseball game at 4PM on Sunday. VM Brimm, Deputy VM
Neukirch, Chiefs Balinski and Sashko Rob Giddens, Finance Director
Anderson, and Trustee Rubin have all volunteered to be buddies for the game.
Sara Herman has contacted the CRD regarding donating shirts.
Commissioner's Reports:
Commissioner Gottlieb —Manned the CRD booth at the Senior Expo on April
25(from loam—2pm) at the Arboretum. The event was well attended but little
attention given to the CRD from the attendees. From the State Treasurer's Office
brought back information about WWW.Cashdash.net below market loans for
adaptive devices; and WWW.eyecanseeclearlynow.com to assist residents with
low vision problems.

Commissioner Klassman — signs for Lou Malnati's are under way

Items for Discussion:
Business Brochure sub-committee: Commissioner Weiner Met at
Commissioner Sussman's house. Made some corrections, would like a review by
the entire commission.

Buffalo Grove Days:
BG Days- Started calling the food vendors today. Culver's confirms 350 ice cream
cups.
Commissioner Sabath will supply blue shirts with black lettering for the Buddies at
the baseball game on Sunday.
Goody Bags: Condell will supply 250 —300 first aid kits; there will be dog bones, balls
and pill boxes. Art work for the bags is done. Commissioner Sabath has a master
list of donors.
Several disabled artists have been invited to display their works in the tent on Monday
of BG Days
Resident 4 blocks from Prairie School is looking for help to walk their child to school.
The Mother is disabled and the father leaves too early. The arrangements they
had last year have ended and they have not had any luck finding new
arrangements. Suggestions from the Commission include signing the daughter
up for Clubhouse at about$107 month or running a notice in the school
newsletter. Chairman Kahen will contact the resident.
