2006-09-27 - Commission for Residents with Disabilities - Minutes Board or Commission: ❑ commission on Residents With Disabilities Document Type: 0 A e g nda 0 Minutes Meeting ate: 09/27/2006 Type of Meeting: ❑ Regular Meeting MINUTES OF THE BUFFALO GROVE COMMISSION FOR RESIDENTS WITH DISABILITIES MEETING September 27, 2006 Call to Order -Meeting called to order by Chairman Kahen at 19:00 hours. Roll Call - Rick Kahen, Mara Sabath, Mark Weiner, Beverly Sussman, Debbie Verson, Sue Gottlieb, Dean Klassman, Brian Rubin, Debbie Holm, Judy Samuels, Geri Miller-Brown, Dave Morton, Larry K. Swieca. Excused: Steve Trilling, Approval of Minutes -Minutes of August 23, 2006. Motion, Commissioner Sussman, second, Commissioner Dave Morton. Approved. Chairman's report: Chairman Kahen reported that Wheeling Township has amplified phones available for legal residents with hearing loss. Marilyn Rebnord requested assistance from the Commission on distributing information on Special Kids/Special Families. The group is no longer able to distribute information through District 96 or District 125 anymore. Trustee Rubin will speak with the District 96 board regarding this policy. Next meeting dates: October 25th, November 29t', & December 27th- Dinner meeting at the Clubhouse, start at 1830hrs. —Will meet in the back room. BG Days Wrap-up: On the Friday before Labor Day, there were 468 reservations. This number had increased to 550 by Sunday. Because of the inclement weather, about 300 people showed up on Monday. Chairman Kahen fielded a question from a resident regarding permission to ride on the more adult rides. Because of liability issues, the carnival will most likely continue to make only certain rides available. Buddy Baseball: The game was fantastic. VM Brimm thanked Chairman Kahen for the invitation to participate as a Buddy. Chairman Kahen has sent thank you letters to Lou Malnati's and the others who contributed to make the event a success. The PA system supplied by Adam Moodhe was helpful. Need to have water on site for the participants. Although there was press coverage prior to the game there was not any media coverage during or immediately after the game. Chairman Kahen will ask about the pictures taken by Hal Norman of the BG Days Committee. Next year, need to advertise that spectator's need to bring his or her own chairs. Dave Haisma from Public Works was very good at providing signs for shuttle stops and for the Buddy Baseball. The Private Party signs were also posted for Monday morning. No more electric golf carts for courtesy shuttles. They are seriously underpowered, and actually stopped while Commissioner Verson was driving. Good feedback from Drew Olbur of Wiener Take All. Request to have chips as part of the food for Monday. Commissioner Wiener: The decision to give lunch to the carnival workers was a very good idea. There was plenty of food and it was appreciated. Commissioner Sabath: No problem with the distribution of the goody bags. Buffalo Grove Police had their RC Car at the tent on Monday. Discussion about asking Village for new Commission shirts. Red w/white lettering and new logo on the sleeve, no writing on the back. V. Commissioner's Reports: Commissioner Miller—Brown: Bill Bogdon from the Secretary of State will be out for a talk in October. VI. Sub-Committee Reports: Business Brochure sub-committee: Commissioner Weiner— Still finalizing the brochure. Items for Discussion: Staff Liaison Report: B/C Swieca to ask DVM Neukirch about business cards, nametags and the new commission shirts. IX. Other Business: Guest Speaker Dr. Fred Margolis, DDS. Dr. Margolis is a pediatric dentist who specializes in dentistry for the disabled. (Special Needs Children). Dr. Margolis is on the Illinois Foundation of Dentistry for the Handicapped and is heavily involved with performing dental screenings during the Special Olympics. He is also a member of a group that supplies Dentistry for the Homebound. He is also the author of the dentistry manual "Beautiful Smiles for Special People". In Cook, Lake & DuPage there is a van that is able to bring the necessary equipment to the patient's . Although many services are offered pro bono, some dentists may ask for 30% of the normal fee to defray costs. However, the State of Illinois does have money allocated to cover costs. Community Hospital Mobile Dental Clinic provides services for residents of Elk Grove, Wheeling and Palatine Townships. They have a van equipped to treat patients. Patients are charged $20/visit, and the van provides full service to adults and pediatric patients. Residents are screened through their respective Township offices for eligibility. X.
