Chairman Kahen: Arts of Life will be at the BG Art Festival. Thanks to Trustee
Trilling for spearheading that effort. Arts ofLife will be in the main info booth.
This way there will be no extra cost for the booth. They will be able to sell their
artwork. Setup will be on Saturday. The Commission will help them man the
booth. There will be a sign-up sheet for manning the booth and for working as
courtesy shuttle drivers.
Deputy Village Manager Neukirch has sent information to Arts ofLife
regarding publicity, application etc.
The BG Days Committee was enthusiastic about participation by Arts ofLife .
Arts of Life will be able to sell their artwork at BG Days and do the
interactive exhibits they had previously discussed. Hopefully these 2 ventures
will generate some good publicity and revenue for the group.
BG Days on Monday will have a new sponsor: Raceline Motors. They will be
setting up a 20' by 30' track for model cars similar to slot cars. They are also
contributing to BG Days as a sponsor.
Names sent to DVM Neukirch for nametags.
V. Commissioner's Reports:
Commissioner Miller—Brown: Representative Kathy Ryg has been working on
bringing the Buffalo Grove Commission for Residents with Disabilities model
to other villages. Representative Ryg serves parts of 19 communities. On May 7th
her office will send invitations to elected officials, plus building and zoning
officials asking them to become involved in her new initiative. She is trying to get
more involvement at the village level, (trustees, village managers, building &
zoning). Representative Ryg would like to see other towns designate part of
their festivals for disabled families.
The meeting to discuss the new initiative will possibly be held at Sedgebrook.
Other hot topics to be discussed would include transportation, housing and
accessibility. If each village had 4, 5, or 6 interested individuals it could be a good start.
Representative Ryg is also on the State of Illinois Disabilities Services
Committee.
Commissioner Sussman: On being shown a"Preparedness Wheel" for Seniors and
Special Needs Populations, thought that the Commission could produce a similar,
customized product.
Commissioner Gottlieb spoke regarding the Parent Advisory Board at Stevenson High
School for parents of disabled children. Jay Miller is the new Director of
Disability Services at SHS. Commissioner Gottlieb is on the board and Ken
Slaw is working on a charter. They currently have 6 members. Jay Miller has
been a driving force behind this group.
Trustees Rubin & Trilling—Nothing.
VI. Sub-Committee Reports:
Business Brochure sub-committee: Commissioner Sussman —Copies of the
brochure were given to the Commissioners for distribution. 1300 copies were
given to the Chamber of Commerce for distribution. Commission is also sending
copies to Wheeling Township offices; Vernon Township offices; and State
Representative Ryg's office. Commissioner Miller-Brown will distribute
brochures to Representative Ryg; Commissioner Holm to Vernon Twp;
Commissioner Gottlieb to Wheeling Twp; Commissioner Samuels to Vernon
Twp Library. Trustee Rubin suggested sending copies to the Special Ed
Coordinator at the school districts. Suggested contacting other chambers of
commerce, (such as Wheeling's) to see if they would like some. Some brochures
will be left for Building & Zoning for businesses renewing their licenses.
Remainder will be locked up in the OVM cage. Commissioner Miller-Brown
suggested giving some to the other municipalities with Representative Ryg's
initiative. Suggestion also made to give some to the Park District for distribution.
Commissioner Holm suggested giving some to the property managers of the
shopping centers and malls and ask if they would be kind enough to distribute
with their rental notices.
VII. Items for Discussion: None
VIIL Staff Liaison Report: CPR Training moved to May 23 due to a conflict with use of
the FD training room. Regular meeting on April 25th, 2007
IX. Other Business: Guest Avi Samuels had a suggestion for a booth for BG Days about
businesses that had been around 50 years for the 50th Anniversary of Buffalo
Grove's Incorporation.
Perhaps something about Accessibility through the Years —how ADA has
changed things. As recently as 1991 disabled residents had to be carried up the
flight of stairs to enter the old Council Chambers. Commissioner Sussman is on
the 50th Anniversary Committee and will bring it up.
50th Anniversary: There will be an Anniversary Calendar produced. The actual
kickoff for the event will be a big celebration at the municipal campus starting
on the actual day of incorporation. There will also be a book produced that will
have everything about the Village.
X. Adjournment- Motion to Adjourn by Commissioner Sussman; seconded by
Commissioner Morton. Adjourned at 2032hrs
Next meeting is April 25 at 1900hrs— Village Hall, Lower level conference room.
