Chairman's report:
Chairman Kahen: Arts of Life has donated a piece of artwork to be auctioned off at
the preview party Thursday. A total of 3 different pieces of art will be auctioned
off. There is a $10/person charge which will go to the Arts scholarship fund. The
Commission will receive the proceeds from the Arts of Life piece. Arts of Life
will be in the main info booth. Setup will be on Saturday. The Commission has
offered to help them man the booth, but Nick in conversations with
Commissioner Samuels has said that he and an intern will be sufficient. Filled
out sign-up sheet for manning the courtesy shuttle. Shifts will be 2 hours long for
each day. 10-5pm & 9:30 to 5pm. AIM Business Printers is sponsoring the cart
again this year. We will try to have permanent signs made up for the courtesy
shuttles —if not for the Art Fest then by BG Days.
4 months ago BG resident Don Hedlund sent a letter to DVM Neukirch regarding
curb cuts and sidewalks. She in turn forwarded it to Village Engineer Kuenkler,
who was going to research the situation. Chairman Kahen has checked some of the
spots identified and some of them do have problems. Mr. Hedlund has not received
any information from Mr. Kuenkler. Mr. Hedlund stated he has been impressed
with the efforts of the Village during BG Days. Chairman Kahen stated that
Building Commissioner Ed Schar has been very responsive to requests from the
Commission over the years.
BG Days: All food is confirmed. Some problems getting pop from the Dominick's on
Lake Cook when they were asked for 20 cases of pop. The Dominick's' on Rte 22 &
on BG Road will each be supplying 10 cases. Lou Malnati's will sponsor& donate
pizza for the Buddy Baseball game; Jewel will donate 10 cases of water for the game.
Still have 125 to 150 goody bags left so we do not have to assemble any this year.
Commissioner Weiner spoke with the Astro employees, regarding our invitation to
eat lunch with us on Monday. They declined but were touched that the
Commission had thought to invite them.
DVM Neukirch has sent out an e-mail asking for volunteers as Buddies for the game.
Rep. Ryg to be invited again as a Buddy.
The Village is setting up 847-808-5555 Prompt#4 for RSVP for Monday of BG
Days
Need to contact Leisa Niemotka in the OVM to see about setting up the website to
RSVP also. DVM Neukirch will have IT assist if needed.
Miracle Field Update: Park District employees have only been letting cars with HC
plates into the parking lot—dropping off is allowed. The police have been letting
people park on Aptakisic Rd & at Churchill Park. Chairman Kahen has spoken
with the NWSRA. They will be able to supply an accessible bus to run between
Busch Grove Park& the Miracle Field during the BG Days Buddy Baseball
game. This is important as this is beyond normal bus stops for BG Days. Unknown if
they can supply a driver. Chairman Kahen will contact Dave Haisma at BG Public
Works to see if one can be supplied.
V. Commissioner's Reports:
Commissioner Miller—Brown: Speaker from Attorney General Lisa Madigan's
Office is due in September. About a dozen books have been donated to the
Vernon Library as part of their "Leap into Literacy" program. There should be
a piece in the Vernon Twp newsletter regarding it. These are the special tactile
books that are handmade. Indian Trails Library was not interested in the books.
Chairman Kahen will call Library Board Trustee Wally Salganik. Other
copies will be donated to NWSRA & BG Park District's Safety Town. Would
the Commission be willing to assist in putting the books together? Affirmative
reply.
Commissioner Sussman: The 50m Anniversary committee is planning to include
information on every commission in the 50t'Anniversary book. Would like to
have a kiosk to display the history of the Commission for Residents with
Disabilities. If you have pertinent dates please send them to Commissioner
Sussman for the calendar.
Commissioner Holm: There will be a "Speak Up Speak Out" Summit in Springfield.
Hosted by: The Illinois Council on Developmental Disabilities (ICDD).

Commissioner Samuels. The Cub Scouts seem to lack planning when working with
children with disabilities. There is no common sense being used when planning
events and access to the activities. I.e. no wheel chair bus for field trips, having
to travel off of a path to get to activities. Seems to be a missed part of the leader
training. Suggested that Commissioner Samuels check with the Boy Scouts and
the ADA website.
Chairman Kahen found a situation at Claim Jumpers in Wheeling in which only 2
Handicapped parking spots are available in this very large parking lot. He has
called Sue Berlini @ Wheeling Twp. Commissioner Sussman noted that with a
similar situation at Buca di Beppo restaurant in Wheeling the matter was referred
to Atty. General Madigan's office
VI. Sub-Committee Reports:
Business Brochure sub-committee: Distribution of the business brochure is
progressing.
Items for Discussion:
Commission received a letter from a Lake County BG resident who has lupus and is
experiencing difficulties in transportation to work as he can't drive himself.
Discussion followed: Vernon Twp has their Pilot 50/50 taxi program, but that is
only available to someone receiving disability through Social Security. This is
because it is a pilot program and the Township does not have the resources to
validate every application. This can be difficult as there are many individuals who
are disabled but not receiving SS benefits.
Commissioner Holm stated that PACE is available however you may be on the bus for
an hour or longer. You must also call for pickup every day. Commissioner Holm
also knows that you must book 1 month in advance for the Vernon Twp bus and
that is currently booked, with no vacancies. Commissioner Verson supplied the
number for PACE is 800-554-7599 and the cost is a flat $3 each way.
