Trustee Rubin knows the executive director of Avenues.
Commissioner Miller-Brown also has questions regarding H/C Parking at Stevenson
High School. Chairman Kahen advised her to call Terry Moons who is on
the School Board.
Trustee Rubin: Dave Kureniec has been accepted into the law school at the
University of Illinois. Representative Ryg is working on legislation that would allow
children to remain on group insurance, and have insurance policies pay for therapy for
autistic children.
Commissioner Holm: Regal Cinemas has put up signs by the curb cuts advising "NO
Stopping Allowed"
At Stevenson High School the students will now be allowed to vote on whether or not
Special Needs students would be allowed to become members of the National Honor
Society. Some students were apparently upset because this was an elite group. In
conversation with Commissioner Holm the principal at Stevenson was concerned
there would now be too many students allowed in. In conversation with the national
office of the National Honor Society some months ago, Commissioner Holm was told
that the local chapter (SHS) set the policy. Commissioner Holm replied "So the
National Honor Society allows discrimination?" Stevenson High School is now
conducting the vote. Commissioner Gottlieb noted that at Libertyville High School
there is a student with Downs Syndrome who is a member of the National Honor
Society.
Commissioner Samuels: At Prairie School the principal has begun monitoring to
make certain there is no parking in the H/C parking spots. Commissioner Samuels
wondered if the Commission could do a PSA or have the Village President's announce during
his report at a Board meeting, the importance of H/C parking, not blocking any
curb cut and abuse of the permits.
Commissioner Garfield: All of the Special Ed Directors will be attending a meeting in
February (February 5th), at the JCYS on Weiland Road at 7 PM. Among other
topics they will discuss the 10 most common problems facing Special Ed Directors.
VL Sub-Committee Reports: Commissioner Gottlieb will be attending the Wheeling
Township Advisory Council before the next CRD meeting.
VIH. Staff Liaison Report: Changes and addendums made to the Commission Annual
report.
IX. Other Business: In December Commissioner Samuels sent Chairman Kahen an
e-mail regarding a way to educate children about disabilities in the schools. SEDOL
and District 96 are working on a program. After much discussion is was decided that
the Commission should not reinvent the wheel but explore what programs are currently
being used by other school districts. Commissioners to research and bring back
information in February. Trustee Rubin suggested the Commission request a meeting
with the Director of Special Needs to discuss this as a part of the curriculum. Perhaps
the Commission could sponsor a workshop for the teachers.
X. Adjournment- Motion by Commissioner Morton, second by Commissioner
Sussman to adjourn. Approved. Meeting adjourned at 2050hrs.
Next meeting scheduled for February 27, Lower Level Conference Room of the
Village Hall
