1. Approval of Minutes, 6/22/2011
The 6/22/2011 minutes will be distributed prior to the next meeting and then considered for approval
at the September meeting.
2. Welcome JJ Hanley/ Introductions
Geri introduced JJ Hanley who created an organization called JJ's List. The purpose is to empower
people with disabilities to evaluate businesses on disability and access issues. Businesses can also
address their commitment to serving individuals with disabilities. There are approximately 900
businesses who are members. The company asks for donations to offset their costs. The company
is about establishing partnerships and providing valuable information. Businesses are encouraged to
pay $94.99 to be part of their business directory. The company also offered disability awareness
training —typically at no cost.
Ms. Hanley will provide public service announcements.

3. Chair Report
The following report was provided at the end of the agenda:
Rick reported that he was stepping down as CRD chair, but expressed an interest to President
Braiman in staying on the commission as a volunteer. He indicated that President Braiman will make
an appointment for his successor. After 11 years as chair, he stated that he wanted to take a
different role with the commission. He indicated that he would continue with his role as Chair through
Buffalo Grove Days.
4. Commissioner Reports
None
5. Disability Awareness Campaign Banners & Posters
Geri reported that there are three new awareness posters:
• Don't park on the handicapped access stripes; there's no room for the ramp.
• Don't Block Curb Cut Access
• If you don't have a placard or a disabled plate, don't even think about parking here.
Geri noted that"unlawful" language was preferred as opposed to "don't think about parking here"
language on the third bullet point noted above. A polling was taken and commissioners supported the
"unlawful" language by a vote of 7-6. Marty indicated he would have the poster re-printed. A total of
250 posters were printed of each poster.
"Don't park on the handicapped stripes poster" will be promoted next. Commissioners agreed to
distribute posters to the shopping centers that they previously distributed posters to.
6. Buffalo Grove Invitational Fine Art Festival Recap
a. Unique Expressions, Saturday
b. Overall festival feedback and recommendations for 2011
Rick distributed an email dated 7/23/2011 from Debbie Verson who was unable to attend the meeting.
The following comments were offered by commissioners:
Advantages
• No tent assembly. The single, shared tent was beneficial.
• One day event was positive.
• Location was good —close to a restroom, shade and water.
• Artist demonstration attracted individuals to the tent.
• Artemio and David Farber were great artists to have as part of the festival.
• The quality of the artists was great. The overall fest was better than last year.
Considerations for 2012
• The set-back of the tent made it difficult to attract pedestrians to the tent. It was suggested
that the narrow portion of the tent be along the main path. It was noted that the information
booth could be relocated to allow the Family Art Tent and Unique Expressions tent to be flush
with the other artist booths.
• It was suggested that at every shift change, the driver of the cart should phone into Mobilecom
to test the walkie-talkie. Create a card for the cart as part of this reminder.
• Remove the "disabled artists" reference on the banner which may deter people from entering
the booth; it was suggested that only "Unique Expressions" be promoted.
• Create a flow of traffic to force pedestrians to the tent.
• At a CHA Craft show, Marty identified that footprint images were affixed to the ground to
attract pedestrians to the tent.
• Create a sandwich board sign to direct individuals to the tent.
• Establish and promote artist demonstrations throughout the day.
• Inquiry regarding the use and value of the golf cart shuttle. Commissioners who drove the
shuttle agreed that there was minimal use of the shuttle. However, it was agreed that the
service is valuable and it serves as a good resource to individuals.
7. Buffalo Grove Days — Rick
a. Shuttle schedule sign-up
Commissioners signed up with Rick to volunteer to drive the short or long golf cart shuttle. Rick will
email the schedule to everyone. Volunteers can pick up the cart at the Information Booth.
b. Buddy Baseball Exhibition Game
Buddy Baseball will be Saturday at 4 pm at Kendrigan Field; rain date is Sunday. Buddies should be
on site at 3:30 pm. Rick asked Commissioners to arrive at 3 pm for set-up. Mara indicated that there
is bottled water, freeze pops, goodie bags, and Lou Malnati's pizza. Volunteers signed up for shifts
with Mara.
Ghida will invite all the trustees to be at the game to be recognized.
Dean indicated that he is working on inviting the owner of Lou Malnati's to throw out the first pitch.
c. Fun & Food Program
• Rick noted that sponsors to date include the Rotary Club, carnival, Lou Malanti's, Panasonic
Factory Solutions, Sunrise, Belmont, Wealshire and Illinois Bone &Joint.
• Indian Trails library donated baseballs.
• Sponsors are needed to donate items to goodie bags. Family Benefit Solutions is one sponsor of
the goodie bags.
• Mara recommended bright green t-shirts for buddies.
• Ghida indicated that the carnival representative spoke to another village employee and indicated
that the number of attendees for Monday's program has increased significantly. There are
voluminous individuals without disabilities that are attending (perhaps accompanied by one youth
with a disability). The Commission discussed that promotion of the event will be emphasized for
Buffalo Grove residents with disabilities and their immediate family members living in the same
home. Donna suggested that we have two areas— pre-registration and non-registered area.
A motion was made by Sussman to limit 5 people per family/registration and $10 per each additional
person. Second by Morton. It was indicated that the cost would offset the lunch expense and to help
deter the great number of people that are attending the free event. The Commission voted 12-0;
motion passed.
It was suggested that volunteers cut the wrist bands so individuals are not taking more than one
lunch.
Mara reported that food will include sub sandwiches, chips, chicken fingers, salads and custard.
Beth suggested that information from JJ's list be promoted at the event. Geri will extend an invitation
to JJ to attend the event and disseminate information.
d. "Fun" CRD Float
Larry will offer the use of his truck to pull the float. Commissioners volunteered to participate on the
float.
8. Old Business
None
9. New Business
Rick reported that the Unique Expressions artist Artemio Garcia took a cab from Dolton to Buffalo
Grove and was charged $250 for the fare. He provided his receipt after the ride to Commissioner
Verson asking if financial assistance could be provided. It was noted it would not be appropriate to
utilize Village funds. Marty suggested that the CRD purchase artwork rather than providing a
financial donation. Ghida indicated that Village funds could be utilized in this regard. It was
suggested that no more than $150 be spent. Mark will follow-up with Debbie to contact Artemio.
10. Village Report
None
11. Next Meeting
The next meeting will be Wednesday, August 24, 2011 at 7:00 pm. The September meeting will be
9/21/2011 due to Rosh Hashanah.
12. Adjourn - Good night!
