Welcome & Call to Order—Chairman Swieca ` II. Approval of Minutes a. 6/22/2011— motion to approve by Kahen, second Garfield. Motion carried. b. 8/24/2011— motion to approve by Kahen, second Klassman. Motion carried Chair Swieca will coordinate with Ghida Neukirch about adding Commissioner Sussman's comments with Carole Sente to the minutes. IV. Chair Report— Larry Swieca • Swieca reported that new regulations are in effect pertaining to parking in Illinois. Drivers can now share the stripped area between spaces. If this happens, it would create an extra space within the same square footage. Vice Chair Report— Marty Sussman • It was suggested that the Commission should make a list of every day things such as height of toilets that impact individuals with disabilities on a daily basis. • It was recommended that more handicap parking spaces be added per square footage. In addition, more handicap spaces should be added for clinics or medical facilities for people with limited mobility, such as 10% and 20% respectively. V. Commissioner Reports • Sussman reported that Walgreens was cutting back the sidewalk space to sell propane tanks. He suggested that the CRD get involved with the Plan Commission review when issues such as this are presented. • Sussman was planning to attend Representative Sente's program on 9/26; dedication of rebuilt park that's handicap accessible. • Garfield indicated that the CRD should have further discussion on guidelines for links to other organizations. • Weisman suggested a survey of ADA compliance. VI. Disability Awareness Month, October—Courtney Weisman • Weisman distributed flyers promoting the 10/26 presentation program by Robin Jones. It was suggested that the flyers be distributed at Representative Sente's 9/26 event, and that everyone should disseminate the flyers throughout the Buffalo Grove area. Weisman communicated with Neukirch who will issue a press release regarding the event. VII. Buffalo Grove Days 2011 Recap and 2012 goals • Sabath participated via conference call. • Verson indicated it was beneficial to have individuals sign-up to help coordinate an event; it was a good way to keep everyone involved. • An inquiry was made about age appropriate carnival rides for older kids. a. Shuttle schedule Overall, attendance seems low— not as many attendees needed rides. b. Buddy Baseball Exhibition Game An inquiry was made and it was confirmed that the police are notified when drivers park on the street for the game. c. Fun & Food Program i. Consideration to change the program to Saturday A concern was expressed regarding this as not a viable option. ii. Buffalo Grove versus area community program iii. Admission for families 5 + people • It was noted that 465 attended the program. The 5+ list was very good. Of the total, 141 people were not from Buffalo Grove; 32 of these were from Buddy Baseball. • It was suggested that language be added to the RSVP line so group home residents understand they are invited and not impacted by the 5+ regulation. • It was noted that a $75 donation was made at the event. The funds will be deposited to the CRD line item account. • It was indicated that there was a problem with people taking food. It was suggested that the police monitor the entrance into Fun & Food. d. Parade • The dog treats were well received. • It was suggested that a secret theme be planned for 2012. VIII. Disability Awareness Committee Report—Geri Miller-Brown • The flyers to businesses regarding snow in the parking lot should be promoted. It was suggested that Commission members disseminate the posters in the same locations as they volunteered for previously. • It was suggested that a budget be established for the Awareness Sub-committee. • Periodic emails should be issued to business owners promoting accessibility issues. IX. Unfinished Business N/a X. New Business • The November meeting will take place on 11/9/2011, and the December meeting on 12/7 due to the holiday schedule. • It was suggested that the CRD set-up a booth at a Farmers Market to sell water/pop to raise funds and provide educational/ promotional information.
