IV. Chair Report
• Vice Chair Sussman reported that Walgreens enhanced their parking area to better
accommodate individuals with disabilities by creating a ramp area near the handicap parking
spaces. It was reported that the Building Department will coordinate with business owners
hereinafter to create comparable enhanced accessibility areas.
• A letter was drafted last month to Doug Gamble, Accessibility Specialist with the Capital
Development Board asking for consideration of several initiatives which would support
individuals with disabilities. The issues include but are not limited to increasing the height of
toilets, increasing the ratio of handicap parking spaces, parking lot restriping. The State is
meeting to review the accessibility code and it modifications to the code are anticipated by
the end of March, 2012. Neukirch stated that the letter was shared with Village Manager
Bragg and President Braiman. It was indicated that establishing Board or Village policy on
matters without research to support the modifications is a concern. The letter could be
revised to reflect "the Village asks for a review of handicapped parking spaces", versus asking
for an increase in spaces without research and detailed justification to warrant an increase.
The letter is drafted under Chair Swieca and Vice Chair Sussman's signatures. The letter
includes language which sets forth:
"Due to the immediate timing of your upcoming meeting, the Corporate Authorities of
the Village of Buffalo Grove have not had an opportunity to review and establish the
Village's policy on these matters. The Commission respectfully requests your
assistance to introduce the recommendations noted below for consideration".
A motion was made by Kahen to send the proposed letter to the Village Board to support
sending to the state, second by Sabath. Motion carried.
Vice Chair Sussman indicated he provided a letter to Representative Sente as a personal
citizen.
V. Commissioner Reports
• Commissioner Garfield reported that she spoke to Leisa Niemotka, Assistant to the Village
Manager who creates the Village newsletter. It was indicated that the CRD could provide
the Village with six public service announcements/articles to be considered for inclusion in
the Village newsletter.
• Commissioner Garfield reported that the Chamber was amenable to include public
education / information in their newsletter to businesses.
VI. Staff Report
• BG Invitational Fine Art Festival, 2012. The festival will be held on July 21 and 22. As
requested, the artist with disability tent and shared youth division tent (Saturday/Sunday)
will be relocated to be in line with the professional artists. The registration cost will be
reduced to $30.
• Volunteer Reception — mark your calendar, March 4, 2012 at the Arboretum Club.
Invitations will be forthcoming.
• A letter has been drafted as requested to all property management firms serving Buffalo
Grove. The letter, in part, promotes the Disability Awareness Campaign and references the
municipal code relating to the prohibition of accumulating snow in parking spaces. The
"reasonable" language relating to compliance was removed, understanding that the
Village is reasonable with its businesses and residents.
VI I. Disability Awareness Month, October—Courtney Weisman
• Commissioner Weiner provided a report on behalf of Geri regarding the Disability
Awareness Campaign. He stated that poster distribution has been proceeding well. The
Vernon Area Library is amenable to partnering with the CRD to create a design for
bookmarks promoting disability awareness issues. If a message relates to a concept
portrayed in the children's book, a program can be coordinated to promote the book and
the program. If the initiative advanced, the Village and CRD logo would be included in the
book mark. The contact at the library indicated the initiative could coincide with the
Summer Reading Program. Weiner indicated he would contact the Indian Trails Public
Library about a bookmark program as well. Garfield suggested partnering with the
schools as well.
• Commissioner Weiner reported that it was suggested that Ms. Robin Jones provide a
presentation about the ADA to the Chamber at one of their monthly meetings.
• Further, it was suggested that the CRD partner with a local community group to help
disseminate the posters.
VIII. Overview of Robin Jones presentation / Other Presentation Programs
• Commissioner Weisman indicated that the feedback received regarding the Robin Jones
presentation was positive.
• It was suggested that consideration be given to another speaker program such as a
presentation by Teresa Pacione, affiliated with Bodies at Work,
www.bodiesofworkchicao.or A presentation could be coordinated in the first quarter
of 2012. The organization also has a number of artists who are part of their membership
whereby they may be interested in showcasing their work at the BG Invitational Fine Art
Festival.
• Commissioner Klassman reported that other presentations could be planned such as
speakers from the Center for Independent Futures.
IX. Twin Groves Holiday Boutique & Community Awareness Resource Fair
It was discussed that the Fair in past years has yielded minimal exposure to the CRD.
Everyone agreed that participation at the Fair should not be pursued.
X. Web site content and promotion
Commissioner Kahen indicated that the web site section of the CRD featuring what the
Commission does, "Who We Are" only lists Buddy Baseball. Kahen volunteered to draft
additional information for this section and send to Ghida to publish for public view.
Commissioner Sabath will provide photos to include on the site as well.
XI. Unfinished Business

XI I. Trustee Report
Trustee Sussman indicated that President Braiman is seeking a judge position. If elected,
Trustee Berman serves a President Pro Tern and would carry out the duties of the Village

anyone was interested n attending; details of the event will be sent to the CRD under separate
