III. Approval of Minutes

IV. Welcome Leslie M. Stern - Leslie M. Stern Design Ltd.
Leslie M. Stern Design, Ltd is a full service interior design firm which assists individuals to create
"interiors that are not only functional, accessible and beautiful, but also express the unique
personalities of the homeowners". Ms. Stern's presentation will be posted on the Village's web site.
The Commission thanked Ms. Stern for her presentation.

V. Chair Report
Chair Swieca reported that he and Vice Chair Sussman attended a meeting with the City of Chicago
Mayor's Office for People with Disabilities. A flyer was distributed providing an overview of
programs and services offered. The services include but are not limited to employment resources,
youth programs, public information and education, accessibility compliance, and more.
The City is coordinating a fair called Access Chicago on July 19, 2012. The fair will be open to the
public and will showcase businesses and organizations serving the needs of people with disabilities
and their families. The event will be held at Navy Pier. It was suggested that the Village coordinate a
bus for interested residents to attend the fair. Staff will review costs of a bus rental and report back
at the next meeting.
A flyer was also distributed providing information about the City's bid incentives to promote disabled
owned businesses. The program was established in 2002 as part of the City's commitment to address
the high unemployment rate of people with disabilities by enhancing economic opportunities for the

VI I. Commissioner Reports
Special Gifts Theater. Commissioner Sabath reported that at the next meeting a guest from Special
Gifts Theater will attend the meeting to provide information about their program. Their next
performance will be February, 2013. Commissioner Sabath indicated that the organization is seeking
a venue to conduct the performance in the Buffalo Grove area.
Buffalo Grove Days. Commissioner Sabath provided a report regarding donations for Buffalo Grove
Days.

April 29, 2012, Fundraising Event at TGIF in Wheeling. Commissioner Shapiro reported that at the
fundraising event, a certain percentage of proceeds will be donated to Canine Companions. Canine
Companions is a non-profit organization which provides trained assistance dogs to people with
disabilities and to professional caregivers providing pet assisted therapy.
Unique Expressions. Commissioner Weiner reported that four artists are registered for the program
during the Buffalo Grove Invitational Fine Art Festival. Commissioner Weiner is conducting
additional outreach to promote the Unique Expressions program. Commissioners were encouraged
to review www.artbystelladg.com as a possible registrant.
Best Wishes Mark Kirk. Commissioner Sabath indicated that she sent a Get Well card to Congressman
Kirk on behalf of the CRD.
Vill. Staff Report
Open Meetings Act Training. All Commissioners were encouraged to take the free Open Meetings
Act Training on the Attorney General's web site. Individuals chairing sub-committees are required to
take the training. Upon completion, please submit your Certificate of Completion to staff.
Subcommittee Responsibilities. Ms. Neukirch reported that all subcommittee meetings are required
to comply with the Open Meetings Act training.
CRD Budget. It was reported that the CRD budget for Fiscal Year 2012 is $800.
IX. Trustee Report
Farmers Market. Trustee Sussman provided a report on behalf of Trustee Stein. If the CRD wishes to
have a booth at the Farmers Market, provide Trustee Stein the preferred date. The CRD is also
invited to sell water and/or pop. If individuals are interested, they may email Trustee Stein at
astein@vbg.org.
My Life as a Service Dog. Trustee Sussman deferred to Mr. Shapiro who shared with the group a
memoire about their service dog, Jamba Shapiro. The dog was adopted through Canine Companions.
The pictures are owned by the Shapiros and the text was written by Ms. Shapiro. The book was
distributed for review by the CRD. Mr. Shapiro suggested that the CRD purchase a select number of
books and then sell them to interested individuals to recover the cost. Vice Chair Sussman indicated
he would research the costs to reprint at various levels.
X. Disability Awareness Committee Report — Geri Miller-Brown
Commissioner Miller-Brown reported that poster distribution continues. Posters were available for
pick-up. Commissioners were asked to distribute at the same shopping centers are previously
selected.

I. Bookmark Program — Geri Miller-Brown
Commissioner Miller-Brown indicated that the subcommittee met with the Vernon Area Public
Library. Minutes from the subcommittee meeting were prepared and distributed. The program
would target school age children and would be promoted in the fall to coincide with the school year.
Three book marks would be created with different messages.
Vice Chair Sussman indicated that Culver's offered to sponsor the program to offset the cost. The
Culver's name/logo would be included on the book mark. VC Sussman suggested that the three
bookmarks could be placed together to create one unique design or message, or they could be
freestanding to portray a special design and message. One message suggested was, "I Can-You Can-
Together We Can". The back of the book mark would feature library information, the Village web site
and the Culver's logo. The library will create a mock-up of the bookmarks.
II. Options Fair, CRD Booth / Senior Expo, CRD Booth
The CRD is registered for the Senior Expo, April 24, 2012. Commissioners not registered to volunteer
are encouraged to contact staff.
The Options Fair in Lake County will be held on April 19, 2012. Chair Swieca indicated that the CRD
will have a booth and can disseminate information. The fair provides transition information for
students with disabilities.
III. Web site content and promotion
A Disability Awareness Page will be created on the Village's web site featuring the posters.
Chair Swieca also suggested that the web site for the City of Chicago Mayor's Office for People with
Disabilities be provided on the Village's web site.

V. New Business
A photo of the CRD will be taken in advance of the May, 2012 meeting. Mark your calendars and
don't forget to wear your CRD shirts.
