CIVIC INVOLVEMENT AND RECOGNITION COMMISSION
NOVEMBER 9, 2000
MINUTES
The meeting of the Village' s Civic Involvement and Recognition Commission was
called to order by Chair Ungerleider at 7:10 p.m. Those in attendance were:
Harvey Ungerleider Bill Brimm
Diane Popper
Lynne Schneider Monyca Price Flack
Zill Khan Dick Oliver
Leonard Gold Betty Lou Manso
Approval of Minutes-October 5, 2000:
The minutes were distributed for review. There were some minor changes and
with those changes made, it was motioned and seconded to approve same as
amended. Motion was approved unanimously.
Chairman's Report:
Chair Ungerleider distributed a job assignments plan, which is attached to
these minutes. Each item was reviewed with the Commission with the following
decisions made:
Develop a Master List of Community Organizations: The current status of
this project was reviewed and it was noted that only 29 surveys had been
returned as of this date. It was suggested that staff wait until after
Thanksgiving and send out follow up surveys. Information will be
provided at the next meeting to update information already distributed
to the Commission.
Develop Criteria for Eligibility for Recognition: Betty Lou Manso and
Zill Khan will work on developing criteria on what types of community
service should be recognized based on a series of questions posed within
the work outline. In addition, a form will be developed that could
become a template upon which to submit recognition requests in a common
format.
Form of Recognition: This is a task on how someone should be recognized
and what should be done to present such recognition. Dick Oliver and
Diane Popper will work on this aspect of the outline and report back on
findings and suggestions.
Develop Concepts for Memorial Recognition: Leonard Gold will address
this task and whether such recognition will include honoring in addition
to memorializing.
Develop Communication Format with Village Board: Bill will review with
both Deann and Chuck Johnson on the how' s and when' s the Village Board
should be contacted when decision points are reached by the Commission.
It was at this time that the Annual Report for the Commission was
discussed and what will be expected on this reporting back to the
Village Board.
Community Resource Clearinghouse:
It was again affirmed that as the concept of becoming a community resource
clearinghouse is developed that the Village will only act as a point of
referral rather than as the point of actually performing such duties. The
Village would be considered an outlet of what is available as well as what
might be needed and would then advise interested organizations as to balance
to have/need issues.
Memorial Policy:
This concept was discussed as part of the work outline. It was noted that the
Arts Commission would be interested, should this project reach such a stage,
or cooperating in soliciting designs, etc. should a memorial policy
development recommend some type of physical structure or monument.
Other Business:
The following were discussed:
1. It was suggested that additional publicity for the Commission be
place on traditional Village media outlets such as the website,
local cable access, within local newspapers such as the Daily
Herald and Countryside Reminder. It was also noted that certain
of these periodicals recognize those that serve and that their
programs should be reviewed to determine if a link can be
established to same. Phil Versten will be asked to review this
matter with staff and offer suggestions.
2. When someone receives certain recognition within the community,
should some type of additional recognition come from the
Commission, and by association, the Village to further affirm that
accomplishment? It was suggested that a letter be written and
that if that is the method of communication, that it be informal
and sincere, i.e. , not a form letter.
3. The local newspapers should be contacted in order to understand
how they approach recognition and efforts of volunteers, etc. in
their circulation areas. Lynne Schneider will review this matter
and report back to the Commission as to practices, procedures,
guidelines, etc.
Next Meeting Date:
The next meeting of the Commission will be Thursday, January 11, 2001 at 7:00
p.m. in the Village Hall.
Respectively Submitted,
William H. Brimm
