CIVIC INVOLVEMENT AND RECOGNITION COMMISSION
FEBRUARY 22, 2001
MINUTES
The meeting of the Village' s Civic Involvement and Recognition Commission was
called to order by Chair Ungerleider at 7:10 p.m. Those in attendance were:
Harvey Ungerleider Bill Brimm
Monyca Price Flack (phone)
Scott Cutler
Leonard Gold
Zill Khan
Approval of Minutes-January 11, 2001:
The minutes were distributed for review. There were no changes and, it was
motioned Gold, seconded by Ungerleider to approve same. Motion was approved
unanimously.
Chairman's Report:
Chair Ungerleider did not have a specific Report for this evening other than
to address the evening' s agenda.
Review of Community Organization/Institution Survey:
Continued Discussion-Member Work Assignments:
Develop Concepts for Memorial Recognition: Leonard Gold continued his review
on concepts for memorial and commemorative recognition. Members agreed with
criteria to determine who should be considered and appeared to be in agreement
that methods of recognition such as Honorees' Pathway/Walks and Commemorative
Groves or Gardens would be a preferred alternative and a starting point for a
suggested scope of program.
It was suggested that recognition be conducted as part of one high-profile
event such as during Buffalo Grove Days or as part of a dinner. This concept
will be reviewed with the BG Days Committee and a representative of the
Buffalo Grove Park District will be invited to the next meeting to discuss
their interest in permitting the use of park properties and if they have such
programs in place.
Other issues that will be reviewed will be how the Arlington Heights Park
District conducts their walkway brick paver program and how it is "marketed",
how funds are raised, if any, and if so, how they are used.
Develop Criteria for Eligibility for Recognition: The draft nomination form
was distributed for review and comment. It will be amended to add the type of
award one is being recommended for consideration.
Bill Brimm reviewed a draft award program with the Commission, which included
eight (8) program concepts, which is to be initially reduced to 7 (consolidate
the Leadership Award into Civic Image) but adding a Memorial category. It was
also suggested that the Program Title as well as award titles be given a
little "zip" in their naming but retaining a tasteful character. The concept
will be circulated internally to Village staff for their input.
An update will be distributed prior to the next meeting for member comment.
Commission Annual Report:
A draft of the Report was distributed. It was noted that the draft will be
updated and the final version distributed with the next meetings agenda.
Other Business:
The issue of motivating citizens toward volunteerism was discussed as was
civic involvement. Questions on how to encourage volunteerism were addressed
and it was suggested that a review of Secretary of State Colin Powell' s youth
volunteer website be undertaken to obtain ideas or suggestions. Scott Cutler
verified that the site is www.americaspromise.org
In addition, in a later call from President Hartstein, it was noted that the
involvement part of our charge needs direction and as much emphasis on its
development as is the recognition component of the Commission' s work efforts.
An avenue needs to be developed and publicly disclosed to engage residents to
support and promote events and organizations. To that end, the recent
community organization database will be further incorporated into an e-mail
network to distribute news and issues and to promote when and where
appropriate. More on this will be reviewed at the next Commission meeting.
Next Meeting Date:
The next meeting of the Commission will be Thursday, March 8, 2001 at 7:00
p.m. in the Village Hall.
Respectively Submitted,
William H. Brimm
