2001-03-08 - Civic Involvement & Recognition - Minutes Board or Commission: ❑ civic Involvement&Recognition Commission u Document Type: ❑A e g nda 0 Minutes Meeting ate: 03/08/2001 Type of Meeting: ❑ Regular Meeting CIVIC INVOLVEMENT AND RECOGNITION COMMISSION MARCH 8, 2001 MINUTES The meeting of the Village' s Civic Involvement and Recognition Commission was called to order by Chair Ungerleider at 7:10 p.m. Those in attendance were: Harvey Ungerleider Bill Brimm Monyca Price Flack Dean Glover Scott Cutler Lynne Schneider Betty Lou Manso Dick Oliver Diane Popper Dale Ducommon-Buffalo Grove Park District Approval of Minutes-February 22, 2001: The minutes were distributed for review. There were no changes and, it was motioned Flack, seconded by Ungerleider to approve same. Motion was approved unanimously. Chairman's Report: Chair Ungerleider did not have a specific Report for this evening. Continued Discussion-Member Work Assignments: Develop Concepts for Memorial Recognition: Dale Ducommon reviewed with the Commission the Park District' s tree and bench purchase program that are used as a memorial as well as commemorative idea. Trees can be purchased for $250 while bench prices vary. The trees are planted in consultation with family members with formal recognition set forth within the Alcott Center on a tree of life plaque. It was noted that other items can be purchased such as picnic tables, park equipment and eventually a brick paver program. The advertising for this program is part of the seasonal publications of the District and contact is through their offices. The concept of a Village brick paver program was reviewed amongst Commission members. It was generally suggested that if this concept is to move forward, that it should occur at the Village Hall grounds and possibly around the flag poles in a revised garden setting. It was suggested that Ray Rigsby be asked for his comments before the next meeting prior to moving ahead with this idea as a form of recommendation. In any program, the bricks would be sold for cost and it was suggested that the Art' s Commission might also be interested in a design program or as part of a similar cooperative effort. Develop Criteria for Eligibility for Recognition: The draft nomination form was distributed for review and comment. It will be amended to add suggestions from the Commission, for review at the next meeting. A second draft of the award program was presented. Program titles have been added although still in draft form as of this date. In addition, the "Criteria" comment will be removed from each award category and made part of a program cover letter. Further, the Commission agreed that rules should be considered as to who is eligible to be nominated (Buffalo Grove residents or non-residents whose work efforts benefit and enhance community life) . Also, all nominees may be subject, as a right reserved by the Commission, to have their application reviewed and possibly interviewed as a matter of due diligence and in order to maintain the integrity of the program. Ideally, the first round of recognition will occur as part of the 2001 Buffalo Grove Days festival. In future years, another venue might be considered although Buffalo Grove Days will not be ruled out. The initial kickoff should be positive and maybe emceed by a celebrity. A plaque will be the recognition as well as a posting within the Village Hall, similar to the tree of life concept used by the Park District, by award category (8 in total) . All Village media outlets will be employed to promote the program, including but not limited to, e-mail, cable television, web site, newsprint, community sign, newsletter. The 2001 program deadline would be July 1st in order to review nominations and prepare for the recognition during BG Days. One last issue was that of liability and as the program formalizes, this aspect will be reviewed with Bill Raysa. Other Business: The issue of motivating citizens toward volunteerism was discussed as was civic involvement. Information will be sought on ways to encourage involvement and civic action. This is an area of the Commission' s charge that require some further discussion and an eventual work plan. Next Meeting Date: The next meeting of the Commission will be Thursday, April 5, 2001 at 7:00 p.m. in the Village Hall. Respectively Submitted, William H. Brimm Staff Liaison
