Chairman's Report: Acting Chair Popper did not have a specific Report for this evening. Continued Discussion-Member Work Assignments: Develop Concepts for Memorial/Commemorative Recognition: The concept of establishing a brick paver garden was continued. The use of such a program would be for residents to honor, either as a memorial or as a commemorative, individuals, groups, businesses, etc in a permanent manner. Staff was directed to contact the Arlington Heights Park District to obtain the criterion on how their program of a similar nature is managed. The Commission believes that the use of a paver program could function in a small way as a fund raiser for the overall work of the Commission with a brick available at a slight markup. The goal here is to be self-sufficient as the Commission' s work recommendations move forward as developed. As this program moves forward, permanent remembrance will be affected through plaques displayed at the Village Hall for each award category established. The Commission discussed a plan to "test" the awards program for 2001. It was pointed out that the Village Board needs to approve this program in that there is the potential for strong public interest and comment. If approved, one award category will be announced for 2001 that will serve several purposes as well as focus the program in it' s first year. First, it will permit the program parameters and objectives to be tested before rolling out in a broader fashion. Second, it will permit the Commission to announce where it is going in terms of recognition and civic involvement and how the program might be expanded into calendar 2002. For calendar 2001, it was suggested that the award be known as the "Buffalo Grove Civic Recognition Award". The nomination would be based upon criteria developed by the Commission and might be drawn from a current draft awards concept that is considering as many as eight forms of recognition. This award would be made during Buffalo Grove Days as part of a Commission presentation. As for the program concept, it was suggested that a presentation be given to the President and Board of Trustees as part of an upcoming meeting. The presentation would include not only a broad presentation but would be further focused on a tentative 2001 time line, criteria to be followed for this year for the award to be recommended for consideration along with the manner of announcement. This could include utilization of all media outlets, the website, cable television, counter distribution and as part of a utility billing mailing. Other Business: The issue of motivating citizens toward volunteerism was again discussed. A draft of a letter on the topic of volunteerism was reviewed with the Commission and it was noted that it is an intended topic within a future Newsletter. Volunteerism is an area for further emphasis by the Commission and it was suggested that the role of the Commission generally and the Village specifically would be to act in some fashion as a clearinghouse for volunteer opportunities to be matched with those that care to volunteer. As the issue was discussed, it was recommended that the Village' s website be considered as the forum to match volunteerism with those that want to volunteer. It was envisioned that the site component would be publicly announced, both initially and in a repetitive manner. The content could be something as simple as: Agency: Event: Date (s) : Volunteers Needed For: Contact: This bulletin board would represent the direct extent of Village involvement beyond acceptance of volunteer opportunities for posting. It was suggested that some form of screening should be considered to make certain that all efforts are undertaken to assure that content is appropriate and representative of potential broad community interest. Bill Brimm will work with Phil Versten on this concept and will report back. Next Meeting Date: The next meeting of the Commission will be Thursday, May 10, 2001 at 7:00 p.m. in the Village Hall. Respectively Submitted, William H. Brimm Staff Liaison
