There were no changes and, it was motioned Cutler, seconded by Khan to approve same. Motion was approved unanimously. Chairman's Report: Chair Ungerleider spoke about his concern and to some extent, disappointment relative to the American Cancer Society' s Relay for Life and the need to raise the interest of this event within the community. It was noted that a representative from Buffalo Grove High School, whose student body is coordinating this year' s event at the school was to attend this evenings meeting. However, the person did not attend to clarify issues and questions. What will be important for the future is to get information out on these type events to encourage involvement, and if appropriate, volunteer involvement. Various options were discussed such as using the Village' s media outlets and proceeding with the prior discussion on improving the website to include volunteer opportunities and how to get involved. Such an approach is to be considered a component of an overall approach toward encouraging involvement and where such opportunities lie. One option that was suggested is to send out a blanket e-mail to civic organizations that have responded is to the past survey requests. That will be done by staff. Discussion-Volunteerism and Involvement: The Commission reviewed the recent release of the statewide research survey entitled "Profile of Illinois:An Engaged State-68 Ways is to Make a Difference" prepared by the Illinois Civic Engagement project (University of Illinois at Springfield) . Several options and alternatives are included amongst a list of suggestions that can be easily implemented is to keep the message about volunteerism and involvement before the community. The Village' s website will be improved is to provide volunteer opportunities whereby the Village acts as a collection conduit for such information. As appropriate, other Village media outlets will be utilized is to distribute information, along with the civic organization e-mail links. Other Business: The Commission would like is to sponsor the Village' s annual volunteer recognition reception next year (2002) as part of their efforts and charge. This will be reviewed with President Hartstein. In addition, the local awards program under consideration was discussed as is to the timing of any calendar 2001 effort (original thought for Buffalo Grove Days) and whether it might be best is to initiate this program in April, 2002 as part of National Volunteer Month. The first step is to review the overall program with the President and Board of Trustees due is to the intentional public aspect of such a program. There might be a scaled down program the first year in order is to test the approach and is to see if there are any sources of embarrassment within the program or guidelines. This will be evaluated over the next two months with an announcement made following the appropriate internal and Board reviews. Next Meeting Date: The next meeting of the Commission will be Thursday, June 14, 2001 at 7:00 p.m. in the Village Hall. However, a meeting may be convened if the issue of the recognition program warrants same. Respectively Submitted, William H. Brimm Staff Liaison
