CIVIC INVOLVEMENT AND RECOGNITION COMMISSION
NOVEMBER 8, 2001
MINUTES
The meeting of the Village' s Civic Involvement and Recognition Commission was
called to order by Chair Ungerleider at 7:00 p.m. Those in attendance were:
Harvey Ungerleider Bill Brimm
Dawn Lantz
Betty Lou Manso
Dick Oliver
Approval of Minutes-October 25, 2001:
The minutes were distributed for review. There were no changes and, it was
motioned Kahn, seconded by Ungerleider to approve same. Motion was approved
unanimously.
Chairman's Report:
It was noted that the Commission is now short two members with the resignation
of Monyca Flack and Lynne Schneider.
Status on Volunteerism & Involvement Sub-Committees:
Discussion continued on comments raised at the last meeting on volunteerism
and involvement. Again, the desire of the Commission is to establish an
approach that would coordinate the wants and needs of community based or
service organizations with those that are ready to assist/volunteer. Dick
Oliver, who is chairing the group identifying needs suggested that meetings
must occur with agencies in community to assess what needs they have that
require volunteers. Those needs must be articulated by the agencies and must
be specific, not general in nature.
Further, if we are to meet with them, the selection should be a few rather
than many in order to discuss ideas, build a program upon those ideas and then
work out program "bugs". Any programs suggested for involvement must be
forward in timing to develop interest and to offer the most lead time to plan
for participation. Listings must clearly categorize the work to be done along
with restrictions or potential length of commitment.
Other comments raised were that the promotion of volunteerism should be
continual whether in print or as part of an event, such as Buffalo Grove Days
or the Rotary music series. A number of venues exist from time to time that
would be opportune for program information to be made available or where it
might be reviewed through a Commission member being on site.
Other Business:
Regarding the above, the Commission opted to schedule interviews with a mix of
community based organizations with broad appeal and diversity for the next
meeting. Five to six groups would be contacted to meet with the Commission
for 30-45 minutes to discuss how they use volunteers, how they are sought out
and what role, if any, the Commission could undertake to assist and support
them in their reliance upon volunteers. These meetings would be for the
purpose of finding facts and to understand the "whats, needs, bows, etc".
Next Meeting Date:
The next meeting of the Commission will be Thursday, December 13, 2001 at 5:30
p.m. in the Village Hall for the purposes of conducting interviews. Betty Lou
Manso will coordinate meeting times.
Respectively Submitted,
William H. Brimm
