Approval of Minutes-October 5, 2000:
There were no to be distributed for review or approval this evening.
Chairman's Report:
It was noted that the Relay for Life will be held at Stevenson High School
this June 21st and 22nd.
Members of the Commission were asked to comment on their observations and
thoughts after considering the interviewing that took place at the last
meeting with representatives of volunteer agencies. General observations were
as follows:
- We should continue to use our media outlets to encourage volunteerism as
well as post volunteer opportunities.
There appears to be enough places to channel those interested in
volunteering toward. We should consider encouraging a day of volunteering
that may be tied into a larger event, such as Make a Difference Day or in
participation with a local organization.
- We might still not know what local organizations want in terms of
volunteers or what they do with volunteers. In addition, we need to
understand how volunteer events or opportunities are distributed to the
community. One of the questions we need to determine is how we should get
information out on what organizations may need.
We might want to consider an organization day or event(s) to introduce
them to the public so the public can learn about what they do and need.
One of the thoughts would be to use the Rotary concert series as well as the
Park District concerts to permit organizations to set up in order to introduce
themselves and their volunteer activities. This would only be for information
purposes and not to raise funds or other solicitations. Both the Rotary Club
as well as Park District will be contacted to determine interest.
One of the national events that will also be researched is the National Youth
Service Day. Local school districts will be contacted to see what they are
planning to do, if anything.
Another national event to be reviewed is the Make A Difference Day, to be held
on the 4th Sunday of October. Further research will be conducted and local
organizations will be contacted on how they approach this event, if at all.
All organization contact efforts will be to determine if there is anything the
Commission can do in order to match needs with those that want to help. If
there is a need for this type of service, the implementation will be
determined. The focus will be on determining which organizations may need
volunteer help. In addition, needs matching should consider those
organizations that work in our community or serve an identified population
within Buffalo Grove, if external. The objective here is to start locally
rather than away from community. Volunteer outreach programs may be more
directed if community based rather than outside of Buffalo Grove. In this
regard, the members of the Commission will ask a sampling of community
organizations about the interest in participating during the Rotary or Park
District events in 2002.
Next Meeting Date:
The next meeting of the Commission will be Thursday, February 11, 2001 at 7:00
p.m. in the Village Hall.
Respectively Submitted,
William H. Brimm
